Oscar-shortlisted doc, dark British comedy to
screen at ‘Weekend Film Series’ in January
Monthly event held in Tradewinds Auditorium
at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI)
An Oscar-shortlisted documentary and an award-winning dark British comedy are the featured films at the ‘Weekend Film Series’ on Sunday January 16.
The documentary, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, screens at 3 p.m. while Down Terrace will screenat 5.15 p.m. Tickets, $15, can be purchased in the Oceans Gift Shop at the BUEI, or by calling 297-7314.
Client 9takes an in-depth look at the rapid rise and dramatic fall of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Nicknamed "The Sheriff of Wall Street," when he was NY's Attorney General, Eliot Spitzer prosecuted crimes by America’s largest financial institutions and some of the most powerful executives in the country. After his election as Governor, with the largest margin in the state's history, many believed Spitzer was on his way to becoming the nation's first Jewish President. Then, shockingly, Spitzer’s meteoric rise turned into a precipitous fall when The New York Times revealed that Spitzer - the paragon of rectitude - had been caught seeing prostitutes.
As his powerful enemies gloated, his supporters questioned the timing of it all: as the Sheriff fell, so did the financial markets, in a cataclysm that threatened to unravel the global economy. With unique access to the escort world as well as friends, colleagues and enemies of the ex-Governor (many of whom have come forward for the first time) the film explores the hidden contours of this tale of hubris, sex, and power.
In Down Terrace, after serving jail time for a mysterious crime, father and son gangsters, Bill and Karl, get out of jail and become preoccupied with figuring out who turned them in to the police. On top of that, the "family business" is on the rocks, and the motley crew of criminals who operate out of Down Terrace aren't feeling terribly trusting of one another. It might look like an ordinary house, but at Down Terrace, the walls are closing in.
Featuring stars of such beloved British TV shows as “Spaced,” “The Office” and “Extras,” the film is a pitch black comedy that alternates unexpectedly between shocking violence and realistic, even moving, family drama.The film won the Best UK Feature award at the British Independent Film Awards, and a Jury Prize at the Raindance Film Festival in London.
Both films are rated R.
