SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

1RULES

1.1The races and series will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing..

2NOTICES TO COMPETITORS AND CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

2.1Notices to competitors and changes to sailing instructions will be posted on the ODC website.

2.2Oral changes to the sailing instructions may be given on the water by hail or VHF from the Signal Boat under code flag “L” in accordance with rule 90.2 (c). Changes must be made before the warning signal.

3SCHEDULE OF RACES

3.1The long distance race is scheduled for May 10th, 2014

3.2The scheduled time of class 1’s warning signal is 1000, with classes 2,3,4 5 following. Note that classes 3 and 4 start together using the same yellow class flag.

4CLASS FLAG

Class 1 Cruising ……………..... Green

Class 2 JAM – PHRF > 168 White

Class 3 JAM – PHRF= < 168 Yellow

Class 4 SPIN – PHRF= < 168 Yellow

Class 5 Multihull ...... Blue

5MARKS

5.1The following government marks will be used: Garbacon (G); Oriental 1, (O); and AC1, (A). Gum Thicket (GT) and South River (S). South River & starting pin are club tetrahedrons. The South River (S) mark will be set at approximately 35°00’ N, 76°36’ W. Garbacon (G) shall be passed on the Oriental (north) side.

6THE COURSE

6.1The marks of the course and sequence will be posted on the signal boat.

6.2The course options and distances between the marks are as follows:

18.9 NM = A – G – S – GT –O – Finish

17.3 NM = A – G – GT –O – Finish

15.3 NM = S – GT – O – Finish

7THE START AND FINISH

7.1The start and finish line will be between the orange flag on the signal boat and the adjacent starting and finishing mark. In the event of a shortened course the finish line will be in accordance with RRS 32.2.

7.2All boats will sail to the signal boat and check in before the race.

7.3Boats whose warning signal has not been made shall avoid the starting area during the starting sequence for other races.

8TIME LIMIT

8.1The time limit for the first boat to finish in each class will be five hours after its start.

8.2Any yacht not finishing withinone hour after the first boatin its classwill be scored DNF.

9PROTESTS

9.1If a yacht breaks a rule and does not exonerate herself in accordance with the RRS, a protest should be initiated. Notification that a protest will be filed shall be reported by the protestor to the Race Committee on the Signal Boat no later than when she finishes the race. The protest form, available on the ODC website, from the Signal Boat, or at the social must be filed within 1-1/2 hours of the last boat to finish the days racing. A protest committee will be selected at the social and a hearing will take place at that time. If a protest is unable to be heard at that time, the RC will notify parties of an alternative time and location. Race scoring will reflect the decisions of the hearing. Note that the RRS permit a hearing to be held, and a decision to be made, in the absence of either party.

10SCORING

10.1The race will be scored as an event in the PHRF series using the Time on Time method.

11RADIO COMMUNICATION

11.1The race committee will monitor VHF channels 16 and 78 the race committee will TRY to announce all OCS starters on channel 78. Failure to observe the flag, or to hear the horn, or radio call if made, will not be cause for redress if the boat does not start properly

11.2All vessels must carry a VHF radio and aid in relaying messages when boats are out of range of the Signal Boat.

11.3Any vessel withdrawing from the race must make every effort to notify the committee.

12DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

12.1Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority does not accept any liability for material damage, personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with, prior to, during, or after the regatta

13INSURANCE

13.1Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance.
