Spend your summer helping local kids improve their reading abilities!

United Way of Lane County is seeking motivated candidates for 4-6 Summer Reading Spot Project Interns. This position will work closely with the Education Program Specialist, Summer Reading Spot AmeriCorps VISTA and community volunteer readers. Interns will coordinate and market a neighborhood reading program for young children for 10 weeks of the summer. These interns will also assist with community book drives and book distribution in underserved neighborhoods throughout Lane County.

This position will be responsible for assisting in the recruitment volunteer readers, distribution of marketing materials, and coordination of reading group logistics. Activities include:

·  Working with local high schools and universities to recruit volunteer readers

·  Organizing a summer kick-off event, a mid-summer event, and an end of summer event

·  Scheduling volunteer readers

·  Emailing confirmations, reminders, information and updates for volunteer readers

·  Emailing or delivering posters and handouts to local physicians, agencies, etc.

·  Assisting in welcoming children and families, tracking numbers and ages of children, distributing prizes

·  Managing site setup and breakdown

·  Other activities, as needed


The internship will begin in mid-June and end in late August (approximately 12 weeks, start and finish dates are somewhat flexible). This position will be unpaid and require 15 - 20 hours per week.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have experience in at least one of the following: volunteer recruitment and management, event planning and coordination, marketing, or working with schools and/or young children. Must have own reliable source of transportation. Must agree to a background check.
