Organization profile
- Petsmart, Inc. (NASDAQ: PETM) is well known for their love of animals, by providing multiple areas of care for their customer’s pets. Found on their company information page, “As the largest specialty pet retailer of services and solutions for the lifetime needs of pets, we employ approximately 52,000 associates and operate 1,289 stores and more than 196 in-store PetSmart PetsHotels® dog and cat boarding facilities in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico” (Petsmart, Inc. 2014). Petsmart has been able to evolve from just a small pet store into a large and successful company. They help treat the customer’s needs, knowing that they serve both the pet parents and the pets. According to Barbra Farfan the Petsmart mission or vision statement states, “To provide Total Lifetime Care for every pet, every parent, every time – which means that we offer solutions, superior products, unmatched services and superb customer service” (Farfan, 2014). The Petsmart mission keeps the managers and employees offering the care and service to both group of customers.
Historical perspective of topic/issue (Discuss the history of the topic you selected from both a national, as well as your organization’s perspective.)
- Many organizations including Petsmart have had their issues with disciplining their employees. For this reason forms and documents have been created for employees and employers to agree upon. Different types of disciplinary actionshave been studied and are used by employers on their employees. Two main types of discipline are corrective and progressive. Corrective discipline is defined as, “a system that allows manager to tailor the types of discipline based on the facts of each employees scenario” (Boundless, 2014). Progressive discipline is defined as, “discipline that provides steps that must be completed in each case” (Boundless, 2014). Both of these types of disciplines are used today from employers.
Topic/issue impact on organization (Discuss how the topic you selected has impacted your organization.)
- Employee performance must be monitored in every organization, to insure that employees are working to their full potential to insure the company is successful. If the topic of employee discipline is not addressed, then all companies would be chaotic. Employee discipline always managers to insure that their employees are performing their job accurately, creating satisfactory customer service, and creating a pleasant work environment. With many retail companies hiring younger people, there is a hirer need for employee discipline. This is because many young people today are not respectful or have good work ethics. Unfortunately managers must play the part of parents for some employees, who are disrespectful.
Organization response to topic/issue (Discuss how your organization currently responds to/deals with the topic you selected.)
- Many organizations will encounter an unruly employee. Most organizations will usually just give a verbal warning, followed by a written warning if the act continues. Few companies will actually fire an employee. This is a shame, as this act of a consequence will show other employees that bad actions are not accepted within the company.
Your analysis of organization response to topic/issue (Incorporate course readings and outside sources to support your analysis, and compare and contrast your organization’s response/approach to that of another similar organization.)
- I grew up with strict parents, which is probably why I am more strict in my life style. To me if an employee is not acting accordingly, then a warning should be given. In some cased a second warning is appropriate. However, after the first of second warning (depending on the scenario) I have no reason to keep the person employed. In my opinion it is an employees reward to be employed with a company. If the employee cannot prove they are able to follow the rules, then they no longer should earn the privilege of the job. If an employee is causing problems within a work place that disrupts other employees as well, it is my job as a manager to eliminate the issue. Maddock and Viton list three types of people that companies should let go immediately. This includes the victim people, the nonbelievers, and the know- it- alls (Maddock and Viton, 2011).
Recommendations for organization (Incorporate course readings and outside sources to support your recommendations/solutions.)
- I purpose that Petsmart look past being a retail store, and focus on how to treat their employees. This will help with the way the employees communicate back to the company and it’s managers. I recommend that Petsmart create an employee discipline policy agreement. HR Hero states, “the employee discipline policy must be communicated to employees by periodically providing a copy to each employee, posting it, or including it in an employee handbook. Employees should be required to sign an acknowledgment that they have received and read the policy” (HRHero, 2014). I also recommend that Petsmart managers fist hire the correct people, as well as fire the problem employees. This will help balance the employee performance, and the overall workplace environment.
