Oregon Beacon Schools

Oregon’s Beacon Schools were selected on the basis of the progress they have made in demonstrating high quality implementation of effective reading practices and strong student outcomes. The purpose of the Beacon Schools is to provide models of successful schoolwide beginning reading programs. These schools will serve as demonstration sites for schools throughout the state to visit. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe research-based reading lessons, learn about providing multi-tiers of reading support, and listen in on discussions on utilizing data to inform instruction.

School Context: Humboldt Elementary has a total enrollment of 237 students in pre-kindergarten through seventh grades. Their total K-3 enrollment is 126 students. A schoolwide Title I school with 100% of their students eligible for Free and Reduced lunch, Humboldt has 7 K-3 certified teachers, 1 Special Education teacher, 1 ELL teacher, and 5 educational assistants to provide instruction to its students in grades K-3. Kindergarten students at Humboldt participate in a full-day kindergarten program. Approximately 9% of students in grades K-3 are receiving Special Education services, and 17% of students are receiving ELL services. Humboldt also has a diverse student population: 62% of the students are African American, 24.5% are Hispanic or Latino, 10.5% are Caucasian, 2% are Asian, and 1% are American Indian or Alaskan Native.

School Context:Jefferson Elementary has a total enrollment of 550 students in grades K through 6. Their total K-3 enrollment is 318 students. A schoolwide Title I school with 65% of students eligible for Free and Reduced lunch, Jefferson has 12 K-3 certified teachers, 1 Special Education teacher, and 1 Ell teacher to provide instruction to its students in grades K-3. Kindergarten students at Jefferson Elementary participate in a full-day kindergarten program. Approximately 6% of students in grades K-3 are receiving Special Education services, and 13% of students are receiving ELL services. Jefferson also has a diverse student population: 75% of the students at Jefferson are Caucasian, 20% are Hispanic or Latino, 2% are African American, 2% are Asian, and less than 1% are Native American or Alaskan Native

School Context:David Hill is one of 23 elementary schools in Hillsboro, a city of 80,000 located fourteen miles west of Portland. 89% of the students qualify for free and reduced meals, and 74% of students are Hispanic, 22% are Caucasian, 2% are Asian-Pacific Islander, 1% are African American, and 1% are Native American. David Hill is in their fifth year as a Reading First school. The school’s selection as a Beacon School is due to effective reading instruction by K-3 teachers as indicated by the outstanding reading skill gains for K-3 students. David Hill Elementary is closing in June 2008 and Lincoln Street Elementary, a new school that will be the Beacon School, will open in September 2008 with Beacon School visits beginning in January 2008.
