CELL PROJECTS: 3 OPTIONS!

OPTION #1: Illustrated Cell Story

Imagine that you are an explorer venturing where no man or woman has gone before… the inside of a LIVING CELL!

The research lab that you work for has discovered a way to shrink you so small that you can enter a living cell and do some exploration and scientific data gathering…

Write a creative story describing your adventure as the first person to enter into the cell. What type of cell will you enter? How will you get in? What dangers will you face? What cellular processes will you observe? What organelles will you encounter?

Be sure to provide accurate descriptions of all cell parts in your story. (A minimum of 10 cell parts should be described)

Note: You can deviate from the plot suggestion made above… Be as creative as you like but make sure it is a great story about the cell!

Illustrated Cell Story Rubric

  1. Includes 10 organelles _____ / 10
  2. Includes information on all 10 organelles_____ / 20
  3. Creativity, Story, and Aesthetics _____ / 10

(Colorful, attractive, neat & easy to read)

FINAL TOTAL_____ / 40

OPTION #2: Cell City

This project will be an original art piece. The required items are listed below with their point value. Make an analogy between a cell and a city (or some other creative choice). In other words, what is a cell like? On your drawing make sure each part of the “city”is labeled with both the cell part and building/part of the city. For example: The cell nucleus controls the activities of the cell. This is similar to the city hall. You may draw a city hall building. Label it “nucleus” as well as “City hall”. Below is a list of cell parts to include in your drawing. Remember: Draw the city and the cell. Make sure the functions are good analogies, that they make sense, and that you can explain how they are similar.

Choose a minimum of 10 cell parts

Cell City Rubric

City labels and drawings: 10 points (1 point for each)

Cell labels and drawings:10 points (1 point for each)

Explanations: 20 points (2 points each)

TOTAL 40 POINTS

Note: You will mostly be graded on the QUALITY and CLARITY of your EXPLANATIONS!

OPTION #3: CELL CATALOGUE

There’s not much that you can’t buy by mail-order any more. There are catalogs for just about anything you can think of. Your task in this assignment is to create a catalog for something that there is not a market for yet ...but you never know about the future. Your catalog will be for the major organelles in a cell.

  1. You are responsible for creating and designing a catalog describing 8 organelles or structures of your choosing
  1. Use your textbook and notes to look up information on the organelles.
  1. Your page must include a description of your organelle and its function, the sales pitch, a pricing structure, and a full-color diagram illustrating each of your “products.”
  1. The artwork must be original and all organelle prices in your catalogue should be comparable.
  1. You will need to design a cover for your catalog as well as a Table of Contents that will be the first page inside the cover of your catalog. The Table of Contents should be done last. Use this format for the Table of Contents:

OrganellePage #Points

Cover1_____

Table of Contents2_____

Organelle or structure 13_____

Organelle or structure 24_____

Organelle or structure 35_____

Organelle or structure 46_____

Organelle or structure 57_____

Organelle or structure 68_____

Organelle or structure 79_____

Organelle or structure 810_____

  1. Your final grade on this assignment is worth 40 points (4 points per page.) The five points for each organelle will be based upon accuracy and completeness of description, neatness, how well you followed directions and creativity.
