SCHOOLS WITH A FAITH CHARACTER PROJECT:Frequently Asked Questions
OPPORTUNITY FOR 500 SCHOOLS WITH A FAITH CHARACTER
We’re looking for 500 schools to receive free teacher trainingon tackling homophobia, biphobia and transphobia
At Stonewall, we have been working with teachers to give them the skills, tools and resources to tackle homophobia, biphobia and transphobia for 14 years. We understand that each school has their own challenges, and we support schools in ensuring all pupils are able to be themselves.
The School Report (2012) found that only half of Lesbian, Gay and Bi pupils report that their schools say homophobic bullying is wrong, and in faith schools this drops to 37%. Teachers who work in schools with a faith character report specific challenges in working with their local communities and institutions, requiring targeted materials and support.
In 2015/16 we piloted a cascade model of teacher training in tackling homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. The success of the project is overwhelmingly positive; in total we trained 1,422 teachers and reached 807,569 pupils. Teachers who attended the training course found it increased their knowledge of practical techniques and strategies by 488% in homophobic and biphobic bullying, and 799% in transphobic bullying. For the teachers in their school that they in turn trained, the average increase was 584% and 644% respectively.
The Department for Education and Government Equalities Office have given Stonewall funding to work on a specific project with 500 schools with a faith character. This project grants Catholic, Church of England, Jewish and Muslim schools, and schools with a faith pupil majority the opportunity to work with Stonewall on tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic language in their school for free.
