About out General Qualifications

Pearson engages with subject experts and teaching professionals to design accessible and stretching qualifications, including:

GCSEs

GCEs

International GCSE

International A Level

Principal Learning

Within these qualification suites we cater for a large number of different subjects. These range from the core English, Maths and Science provision through to ICT, Physical Education and Economics as well as Global Citizenship, Gujarati and Pakistan Studies.

The role of the Assessment Associate (AA) for General Qualifications

Examiners, Moderators and senior Assessment Associates play a vital role in the delivery of our qualifications. Those who undertake these roles typically do so alongside their teaching career, adding real value to their continued professional and personal developmentas well as to their schools or colleges. Pearson AAs come back year after year because the insights they gain from contributing to the assessment process has a positive impact on their teaching. For those that show a real flair for assessment, there are opportunities to progress to Team Leader, Assistant Principal Examiner/Moderator or one of the senior AA roles.

The senior Assessment Associate teams consist of a Chair of Examiners,Chief Examiner, Principal Examiners and, for subjects which include a coursework unit, Principal Moderators. These teams will work together to write and create accessible and stretching papers or tasks for students and to ensure standards across the qualification. All examiners and moderators complete a standardisation activity where they are trained by the Principal Examiner/Moderator how to apply the mark scheme accurately.Well established support networks via the supervisory roles undertaken by AAs ensures our examiners and moderators are able to ensure 100% accuracy and on time results.

The number of AAs required differs for each qualification and is dependent upon the number of candidate entries made along with the way in which the unit is marked. The vast majority of our papers are marked electronically and accessed via our dedicated AA web portal. Some are marked in hard copy alongside coursework, which is sent to our AA’s homes. For a small number of units, including those from within the Drama, Physical Education and Art & Design suites, we require the AAs to visit centres to carry out the assessments.

Typical large subjects whereby we need to recruit a high volume of examiners include:

GCSE Mathematics

GCE Mathematics

GCSE English Literature

GCSE Religious Studies

GCSE History

Last year we contractedover 1500 GCSE Mathematics examiners of which 400 were new recruits. Of more than600examiners who took up the role of GCSE Religious Studies Examiner, 100 were new. GCSE History presents an identical story with 100 new examiners for 600 undertaking the work in total.Subjects like these always present opportunities for qualified teachers to be involved with assessment. As these subjects become more popular we need to take on more examiners.

As well as high volume recruitment for our large subjects, we are also always looking for people to work with us on our smaller, more niche subject areas. For these subjects, we’ll typically take on fewer than 10 new examiners per year. Last summer we engaged with 25 people for our GCE Arabic assessment teams having taken on 4 new examiners in preparation for the series and 14 for International GCSE Economics which included 6 new colleagues. It is sometimes these smaller units that present us with the biggest recruitment challenges as it can be difficult to find people with the right expertise.

Across both our large and small subjects our aims remain the same; to ensure on time and accurate delivery of results. We focus a lot of attention into recruiting and training our Assessment Associates. We provide teachers with the skills they need to accurately examine and moderate candidate work, enhancing their knowledge of the assessment process and positively impacting their teaching.

Over the following pages you will find a full list of subjects, at both GCE and GCSE level, for which we are currently recruiting. Further details can be found on our website.
