Openings and Drum/Dance Events
2011 – 2012
Aaniin kina gwaya,
We have provided a list of our monthly Grandfather Teachings (value/character words/teachings). Each teaching will be used for the entire month and will be integrated into the language arts curriculum. Our Grandfather Teachings are a part of Anishinaabe Bimaadiziwin (Anishinaabe way of life), but cross all boundaries. They may be considered ‘values’, ‘character traits’, or ‘models of good citizens’. Anishinaabe oral tradition has handed down the story of how our people received these 7 gifts. It was during a time when the people had forgotten their original instructions, and needed something else to teach them to live in a good way. We want to share good values and teachings with our students.
For new teachers, please check with other teachers at your grade level about how they have integrated the teachings/values into their language arts curriculum. If you still need help please ask myself or Carolyn Dale and we can give you examples of how to integrate them into the lessons.
An opening will be done the following month to share what has been learned about that particular teaching. The openings will be divided up into two groups, K – 2 and 3 - 8. Each class will have the opportunity to do a presentation to the group, sharing what they feel that particular teaching means. The exception will be for Grades K – 2. Middle School students will be presenting for your section, but you are welcome to do a presentation if you wish. There have been many different examples done from Books to mini-plays to songs. We ask that they be kept relatively short (10 – 15 minutes), but informative. Again, it is best to get ideas from other teachers.
Reminder: The opening for each teaching will be at the beginning of the following month. Example: October – Minaadendimowin (Respect), the opening for that teaching will be in November.
The complete schedule is on the following page.

At the conclusion of all openings, our school drum will sing a song. This will require our experienced singers (a list will be provided) to attend at times that are not their class scheduled time. The general rule is students usually are able to attend unless they are far behind in their work, or their classroom behavior and conduct has been inappropriate.
Drum/Dance Social Schedule
2011 – 2012
The Drum/Dance Socials will be in three groups.
K – 2, 3 – 5, and Middle School will be the last group
We will have a social for each group in the same day. Students who are singers will be asked to attend all sessions. Teachers will have a list of those students before the socials. Same rules apply as listed on the opening sheet for drummers and singers.
