N.A. Ferri Middle School Chorus: 2015-2016

Dear Ferri Chorus Students, Parents, and Guardians,

Welcome! I’m glad you are a part of the chorus for the 2015-2016 school year. We have some great performances and events planned for the chorus this year and I look forward to working with all of you!

Objectives:In chorus, students will sing a variety of music in unison, two, and sometimes three parts. While learning this music, students will also learn about proper vocal and choral technique, including diction, breathing, phrasing, dynamics, and blend. Students will have several opportunities to perform this music.

Mandatory performances:It is the obligation of every chorus student to attend two concerts for this school year: the winter concert and the spring concert. The concerts are important because they give us the opportunity to display to the community all of the music we’ve been learning in class. Attendance of these concerts is mandatory and part of each student’s chorus grade. Concerts will be held in the Johnston High School auditorium. The Winter Concerts will be on January 26, 2016 and the Spring Concerts will be on May 24, 2016. Mark your calendars! More concert information is on the opposite page.

Additional performances opportunities:

  • Grade 7 and 8 chorus students are encouraged toaudition for the Rhode Island Junior All State Chorus. There will be an audition fee and after school rehearsals with Mr. Conlon to help prepare for the audition. More information will follow for those students who are interested in this great opportunity.
  • The chorus will be scheduled to sing on the ice at a Providence Bruins game on a Sunday afternoon in April 2016.Mandatory rehearsals for this event will be held after school in March and April. More information will follow.
  • Grade 7 and 8 will once again have the opportunity to sing at the Great East Festival, an all day performance field trip, tentatively schedule for Friday, June 3, 2016. The choruses will perform for judges, receive an award (bronze, silver, gold, or platinum) based on their performance, and then spend the rest of the day at an amusement park! More information will follow.
  • Grade 8 Chorus will sing at 8th Grade Awards Night, which will take place on a weeknightin June 2016 at Johnston High School. All Grade 8 Chorus attendance is mandatory. More information will follow.

If you have any questions at all throughout the year, please contact me at or call the school at 401-233-1930 x2724. I look forward to a fun and successful year of singing and learning!

Sincerely,

Tom Conlon, Chorus Director
