Open Your Eyes Sophomore Research Project

The purpose for this project is to get you to ‘open your eyes’ to problems in the world that you did not know about before – and broaden the scope of you world-view in the process. You will conduct your research through the CHHS online databases, organize your findings in an electronic presentation format and present your findings to the class.

Procedure:

1) The Problem

Identify and research a problem in the world. The problem must be one that is global (outside the borders of the USA), must affect people directly, and be one that is not currently making headline news. (See below for a list of possible topics.)

Include the following in your search:

1.  historical background of the problem and why it is a problem

2.  where it is

3.  who is responsible for creating it

4.  who it affects and how it affects them

5.  what is being done to address/correct the problem and the possible future of the problem

2) Nonfiction Reading

·  Read to find out about the problem using CHHS Media Center databases (and other sources with teacher approval).

·  Take notes as you read articles about the problem and complete the attached handout with information.

·  The articles must come from a credible and reliable source…not a pop magazine, an online blog, or Wikipedia. Databases on our school’s media center website are all credible and reliable. Prior teacher approval is required for the use of any other sources.

3) Electronic Presentation

·  Present your findings to the class using an electronic presentation format. Use Prezi or PowerPoint, or another format with my approval.

·  Follow the handout directions to create your presentation.
