Open House Praha 2016 opens roof terraces and underground shelters

Press release, Praha April 11th – 51 architecturally interesting buildings that are normally inaccessible to the public will be opened for the 2nd year of the Open House Praha festival, offering a unique chance to take a peek inside houses that are normally only passed by.

“The festival has also ventured further away from the city center, and really each of these slightly more distant buildings are worth it,” promises Andrea Šenkyříková, the Open House Praha Coordinator. Open House Praha will offer access to historic palaces, modern office buildings, residential housing, and technical and industrial buildings. The gems of this year include the TV studio in the SAZKA building where the daily national lottery takes place, the new headquarters of AVAST Software in the Enterprise Office Centre, and also Invalidovna. This may be the last time this year for visitors to see the interiors of Invalidovna, because the building is going up for sale in June.

For access to buildings with technical facilities, visitors must again be registered in advance. Buildings that require pre-registration are the Štvanice hydroelectric power station, the Central Telecommunication Building CETIN, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of CTU in Prague, the Staropramen Brewery in the Smíchov district and the Protected Health Department KO17 (cover) under the Thomayer’s Hospital. Registered visitors will also be able to take a tour of the technical facilities at Main Point Karlín, an award-winning building for the best office building in the world in 2011.

This year the organizers also thought of the children who might be visiting, in which eight open houses offer worksheets, containing information and exercises, which will encourage observation skills and creativity. The Prague main railway station, The House at the Two Golden Bears and the Czech Microsoft Headquarters have also prepared additional family activities.

“We are glad last year's successes convinced other building owners to join Open House. Prague definitely has a lot to offer when it comes to architecture and we believe that more owners will gradually lose their shyness and mistrust,” Andrea Šenkyříková stated.

The majority of the buildings will be open on both days from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but there are some exceptions. We, therefore, recommend to read the detailed information provided in the printed brochures, visit www.openhousepraha.cz, or download the mobile apps for iOS and Android, launching at the end of April.

The Open House concept was created in 1992 in London in an effort to strengthen the relationship of the general public to the spaces and city around them. Founder Victoria Thornton visited Prague last year, and last year’s Open House Praha received 38,500 visitors.

A press conference will take place on 10 May 11 a.m. at Quadrio, Purkyňova 2121/3, Praha 1. The building will be opened during Open House Praha 2016.
