Selected Research Activities
Computational methods in engineering and science, continuum mechanics, fracture mechanics, multi-scale modeling of materials, development of the natural element method, mechanics of biofilms, mechanics of the human spine, composite mechanics. Current research includes:
Multiscale Fracture Simulator (w/ G.B. Olson, Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, W. K. Liu, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, and others - D3D Digital Materials Design Consortium, funded by ONR). Developing multiresolution continuum model for simulation of fracture processes across several length scales in ductile metals; Predictive scheme relating fracture toughness to microstructural parameters.
Finite Element Modeling of the Human Cervical Spine (w/ S. Ondra, MD, Dept. of Neurological Surgery, funded by Medtronic Biologics and Spine). Developing a model of the human cervical spine, including new large deformation constitutive models for collagen-reinforced soft tissue, extending constitutive models to multi-scale formulation. Developing asymptotic crack tip fields for crack/tears in soft tissue. Developing a simplified model of the lumbar spine incorporating nonlienar disc behavior and the effects of muscles.
Level Set and Extended Finite Element Methods for Evolution of Biofilms (w/ D. Chopp, Department of Engineering Science and Applied Mathematics, and Alan Hausner, Department of Microbiology, funded by NIH). Developing level set and extended finite element methods for the evolution of biofilms without the need for the biofilm surface to coincide with element boundaries and without the need for element remeshing. Extending the method to the case of fluid flow around biofilm. Investigating quorum sensing for case of fluid flow and growing biofilm. Exploring extensions of methodology to precipitate evolution in metal alloys.
Selected Teaching Activities
Curriculum development for Engineering First, the core freshman curriculum in the McCormick School of Engineering. Developed the course Engineering Analysis 2: Linear Algebra and Mechanics. Introduced computing and design into basic engineering science courses through Searle Family Grant for Innovative Teaching and Keck Foundation Award for Engineering Teaching Excellence.
