Option 1 – Choose one of the following themes and explain how it is relevant to the short story, “The Lady or the Tiger”. Provide at least two examples of where we see this theme emerge in “The Lady or the Tiger”. Provide text evidence and extend your writing with a meaningful connection.
- Love vs. Jealousy
- Jealousy can lead people to act unjustly
- Loyalty vs. Selfishness
Option 2- “The Lady, or the Tiger?” is a story that provides a love affair, a barbaric criminal justice system, and an unexpected ending. The resolution of the story is probably not what most of us wanted, but it forces the reader to ask a few questions. Can you trust your life to a friend/boyfriend/girlfriend? Use specific details and evidence from the text to support your opinion. Be sure to extend and enhance your response with a meaningful connection at the end.
Option 3 - The princess was torn between the decisions of her lover’s fate. She could let him live, but suffer through seeing him with another woman, OR, she could let him die a tragic death, but not have to see him in another relationship. Either way, the princess would not be completely happy. Which is a stronger emotion, love or jealousy? Use specific details and evidence from the text to support your opinion. Be sure to extend and enhance your response with a meaningful connection at the end.
Option 4: At the end of the story, “The Lady, or the Tiger?” by Frank R. Stockton, the author cautions the reader to carefully consider the question of whether it was the lady or the tiger that came out of the arena door. Although he never explicitly (clearly) answers the question himself, he does provide evidence for both positions. Choose the outcome that you believe is best supported by the text, and compose an argument that includes at least two textual references to support your claim using direct quotes and page numbers. Be sure to extend and enhance your response with a meaningful connection at the end.
