ONTONAGON RECREATION COMMISSION

HELD AT 5:10 PM ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2016

AT 315 QUARTZ STREET, ONTONAGON, MI

PRESENT: Jacek Olszewski, Chairman,Members:Jill Johnson, , Sue Kempen, Dawn Miller, Arnie Bolo, Manager, Joe Erickson, Robert Rotundo and Audrey Johnston.

ABSENT: Tony Smydra, Sarah Wagner,

CALL TO ORDER:

At 5:10 pm the meeting was called to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

AGENDA:

A motion was made byJohnson, second by Kempen,(CARRIED) to approve the agendawith the of addition item B-MidAmerican Snow & Terrain Expert Racers Racing Circuit.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:

A motion was made by Miller, second byKempen, (CARRIED) to approve the minutes of the October 19, 2016 Planning Meeting. Jill Johnson abstained.

BUSINESS ITEMS:

  1. RECREATION PLAN GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The Manager reviewed the prior Recreation plan and found some errors that will have to be corrected. The Committee discussed plans, goals and objectives and the manager had a list of about 26 items the group discussed in the past. He will break it down to 5 top objectives to be reviewed at the next meeting.

Marina grants and parks need to be added to the 5 year work plan goals.

Some potential sites and discussion for goals are:

Parks south of M38

Airport – cross country skiing, snowshoe and hiking

Township – campground, theater, library, Firesteel property, small craft launch

James K. Park – wheel chair accessible, improved benches and picnic tables

  1. SKIP SCHULTZ – MID AMERICA SNOW AND TERRAIN EXPERT RACERS (MASTERS) RACING CIRCUIT

Skip Schultz discussed the Mid-American Snow and Terrain Expert Racers (Masters) racing Circuit that will be located at the James K. Paul Street by his home on January 7, 2017.

Bob Rotundo commented the DDA and the Partnership should be involved to support the races.

A motion was made by Johnson, second byMiller, (CARRIED) to recommend to the Village Council to support the Mid-America Snow and Terrain Expert Racers (MASTERS) races set for January 7, 2017 at the James K. Paul Street. The motion was amended to include this race in the formal Recreation Plan, provide porta johns and to advertise on the Ontonagon Community event sign.

OTHER BUSINESS:

Railroad yard – DNR removed the rest of the ties and metal. The next step is to execute a lease. We may be eligible for Brownfield assistance. The owner is not eligible for Brownfield assistance but the buyer is.

The Aspirus Hospital wants a $100.00/year donation to their Aspirus foundation for the use of the RICC Park. This will be discussed further at the next meeting. It was decided to have the manager place the order for the pavers for the RICC Park by the end of November.

The Recreation light installation bids are due on Monday, November 21, 2016. They will work with the hockey association when ready to install.
