OF ACCIDENTAL POISONING

MS 18

Historical Note

The O.A.C.A.P. Collection represents the work of the Ontario Association for the Control of Accidental Poisoning. O.A.C.A.P. was a non-profit organization created by a local pediatrician, Dr. Henri Breault and incorporated in 1963. It was designed to promote the invention, development and refinement of child-resistant containers and the use of such containers on all prescription medicines. Pressure by coroners, fellow pharmacists and consumer groups further strengthened their efforts during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.

In 1964, O.A.C.A.P. played an instrumental role in the promotion of ipecac syrup as an emetic in poison cases. As well, the corporation launched several safety awareness campaigns and kept detailed accounts of childhood poisonings until O.A.C.A.P.’s dissolution in 1980.

Content Note

The O.A.C.A.P. Collection spans the years 1957 through 1983 with the bulk of the documents falling between the years 1962 through 1979. The collection is divided into five series: O.A.C.A.P. Administrative Records (1962-1980), O.A.C.A.P. Correspondence (1962-1981), Poison Prevention – General (1963-1976), Research and Development Files (1963-1983) and Related Manuscripts and Published Materials (1957-1979 not inclusive).

Also found within the collection are a clippings file, scrapbook and photographs (see Appendices I-III).

This collection would be of interest to local historians, those individuals interested in the history of pharmacy and potential biographers of Dr. Henri Breault (1909-1983) and William Wilkinson (b.1909), who both served as presidents of O.A.C.A.P. during its eighteen-year existence.
