General Information

DRIE offers eligible tenants an exemption from rent increases. The owner of the building receives a credit against their real estate taxes from the City of New York. Applicants must meet ALL of the eligibility requirements.

Eligibility

You must:

Rent an apartment that is:

  • regulated by the Division of Housing and Community Renewal (rent-controlled or rent-stabilized apartments, rent regulated hotel units);
  • Mitchell Lama apartment or co-op;
  • owned by a limited dividend housing company, redevelopment company or housing development fund company incorporated under the private housing finance law; or
  • Section 213 Cooperative Housing Companies

Be the adult head of household:

  • (18 years of age or older) named on the lease or rent order,
  • be the tenant of record,
  • be the spouse or registered domestic partner with a disability or either of the above.
  • Tenants of record must have attained and exercised their legal rights of succession to the apartment when the leaseholder vacates the apartment either by moving or death;

Receive eligible state or federal disability-related financial assistance:

  • Federal Supplementary Security Income (SSI)
  • Federal Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
  • US Department of Veterans Affairs disability pension or compensation (Mustbe Military service-related disability pension or compensation)
  • Disability-related Medicaid (if the applicant has received either SSI or SSDI in the past).

Income Eligibility

  • Starting on July 1, 2014, the income threshold increased to $50,000 per household. There willno longer be a different income requirement for a one-person household versus a two plus personhousehold.
  • You must pay more than one-third of the household's aggregate disposable income for rent.

Renewal
Your benefit must be renewed before your lease ends. To continue getting your DRIE benefit, mail your completedDRIErenewal applicationand include all required documents before the "End Date" stated on your Approval Order. The Department of Finance will mail you a renewal application approximately 60 days before your DRIE benefit expires. However, if for any reason you do not receive the renewal application, you must still submit a renewal application or your benefit will expire.

DRIE Ombudsperson
The Department of Finance now has a DRIE Ombudsperson whose job is to help identify and resolve issues with your application or benefits. The ombudsperson is here to help after you have completed theapplication process.

  • Have you filled out and submitted an application for DRIE?
  • Have you gotten a letter back from the Department of Finance about your application telling you that your application is approved, denied or pending?
  • Does the letter have information about contacting the ombudsperson?
