Online Course Development and Approval Process
To ensure that the OAB (Online Advisory Board) has time to review the course and that instructors have time to complete revisions (if needed), the online course must be developed, and OAB Assessment Form and Rubric submitted, by the following dates:
OAB submission deadlinefornew courses:
- For spring 2011 - September 16th
- For summer 2011 - March 11th
- For fall 2011 - April 15th
Instructors should begin this process at least nine months before the proposed course is to be taught.
The following is a breakdown of the steps involved in developing an online course.
- Obtain permission from Division Dean to develop an online course.
After obtaining permission from Division Dean, please notify Jennifer Summerville, Associate Dean, Distance and Weekend College (), Sherry Schumann, AVP Distance and Weekend College () and appropriate division/department personnel. Please include the date by which the course is intended to be taught.
- Request a new Blackboard course development shell(please click here).
- Meet with a TLC Instructional Designer to plan your course.
- Develop your course.
- Complete the OAB Assessment Form and Rubric and email it toJennifer Summerville, Associate Dean, Distance and Weekend College @ r call if you have questions: 972-578-5569.
- The faculty signature page (page 2 of the Assessment Form and Rubric) should be signed, dated, and mailed, through campus mail to Jennifer Summerville, Associate Dean, Distance and Weekend College Provost Office, SCC.
- Request that WebServices make your course be available for OAB review using the OAB Faculty Review Account. Please click here to make that request.
- OAB will review the course at its next meeting and notify the instructor and Division Dean of its decision. The OAB’s decision will be one of the following:
- Course approved. A copy of the approval document and the Online Advisory Board (OAB) scoring rubric will be forwarded to the faculty member’s division dean and the VPP for final approval. Comment/Recommendations provided by the OAB.
- Course not approved, pending minor revisions. A copy of the scoring rubricwill be forwarded to the faculty member and division dean specifying the area(s) that are subject to revision. Once the revisions have been made, the faculty member will notify the Associate Dean, Distance and Weekend College. The Associate Dean will notify the Chair of the OAB and a desk review of the course will be completed and the appropriate action will be taken. A desk review will be completed by members of the OAB and will not require full review at the next meeting.
- Course not approved. The course requires revision to meet the standards established by the Online Advisory Board and Distance Learning. A copy of the scoring rubric will be forwarded to the faculty member and division dean specifying the areas that are subject to revision. The OAB recommends that a member of the DL/TLC staff is consulted to assist inthe revisions. For assistance, please contact the Director of Distance Learning or an Instructional Designer. Once the revisions have been made, the faculty member will notify the Associate Dean, Distance and Weekend College. The Associate Dean will notify the Chair of the OAB and a review of the course will be scheduled for the next regular meeting of the OAB.
- Division Dean signs course approval form and sends it to the VPP for final approval and signature.
- Dean and/or instructor notifies department chair and appropriate Collin personnel of when the course is to be taught and added to the course schedule.
