Online Catalog, Databases, and E-books Scavenger Hunt

Please read each set of directions listed below very carefully. Each question has a different set of directions that you must follow in order to accurately answer each of the questions. All questions that need to be answers are identified with bullets and are also enclosed in a box with a border except for the final question which is an open ended essay question.

Question 1 (14 points-each question is worth 2 points)

Directions:

  1. Go to the Western Piedmont Community College Library Website at:
  2. Click on the “Library Catalog Access” link in the center of the page.
  3. Type “college transfer” in the Simple Search box provided in the center of the page and click Search.
  4. Answer the following questions based on the search results provided.

** Hint- You might have to click on the actual title of a specific book and then the More Information link on the book details page to be able to answer some of the questions below.

  • How many unique records were found in the search results?
  • Who wrote the book “Next steps for the community college”?
  • What is the Call Number for the book?
  • In what city and state was the book published?
  • How many pages are in the book?
  • How many copies of the book does the WPCC Library own?
  • Is this book available for circulation?

Question 2 (18 points-each question is worth 2 points)

Directions

  1. While in the WPCC Online Catalog, conduct an additional Simple Search of your own choosing. (If you are on the More Information page for the book above, you will need to click the Simple Search button at the top of the left navigation bar on the Online Catalog Page)
  • What keyword or words did you use for your search?
  • How many unique records were found in the search results?

Choose a specific book from the search results to answer the remaining questions.

  • What is the complete title of the book?
  • Who is the author of the book?
  • What is the Call Number for the book?
  • In what city and state was the book published?
  • How many pages are in the book?
  • How many copies of the book does the WPCC Library own?
  • Is this book available for circulation?

Question 3 (18 points-each question is worth 2 points)

Directions:

  1. Go to the Western Piedmont Community College Library Website at:
  2. Click on the “Online Resources” link in the center of the page.
  3. Click the “Western Piedmont E-Books Library” link in the center of the page.
  4. Type “plagiarism” in the Search box provided in the top left corner of the page. (DO NOT CLICK SEARCH YET- answer the following question first)

When you start to type a keyword in the E-Books Search Box, a series of additional suggestions are provided that will direct you to more specific books on the topic you are researching. List 3 additional options that are presented after you have typed “plagiarism” in the Search box.

  1. Once you have listed three additional search options above, click Search to continue your keyword search.
  2. Answer the following questions based on the search results provided.

** Hint- You might have to click on the actual title of a specific bookto be able to answer some of the questions below.

  • In what year was the book, “Success in On-line Learning” written?
  • Do you think the contents of the book would provide valuable information for students taking online classes is 2015? Why or why not?

Scroll down the search results page to find the book, “How to Succeed in College (while Really Trying): A Professor’s Inside Advice.” Click on the PDF Full Text link beside the picture of the book to answer the following questions.

  • What is one suggestion the author provides for, “Finding the Best Classes and Choosing the Right Major”?
  • Do you agree or disagree with the author’s suggestion? Why or why not?
  • What page provides information on peer tutoring?
  • How many chapters are in the book?

Question 4 (12 points-each question is worth 2 points)

Directions:

  1. Go to the Western Piedmont Community College Library Website at:
  2. Click on the “Online Resources” link in the center of the page.
  3. Click the “NC Live” link in the center of the page.
  4. Answer the following questions based on the search results provided.

First, you will need to click on the Articles button in the center of the page on the main NC Live homepage. List names for 3 journals, magazines, or newspapers you might use if you were wanting to find more information about a particular topic in the medical or health fields.

Directions:

Next, click the NC Live icon in the top left corner of the page to return to the NC Live homepage.

  1. Click on the Videos button in the center near the bottom of the page.
  2. Click the “Films on Demand Video Collection” link.
  3. Type “academic success” in the search box and click the Search button.
  4. Scroll down the page of search results to find the video “Time Management Tools”
  5. Click the title of the video to open, and watch the video.
  6. List three time management tips that were presented in the video.

Question 5 (4 points)

In 3-5 complete sentences, please describe a concept or idea you learned from completing this scavenger hunt activity.
