Course Description / Goals:

1. The purpose of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the basic theory, structure, and practice of American Government.

2. Students will be able to understand the organization, power and responsibility of our government at the local, state and national levels.

3. Students will learn the rights and responsibilities of all citizens of the U.S.

4. Students will study politics and political behavior.

5. Students will study the economic, political and historical factors that affect American Government.

6. American Government is a 1 semester course required for graduation, * and fulfills the online course requirement for graduation.

Materials Needed:

  1. Computer / internet access
  2. Focus & Canvas websites

Classroom rules:

1. Be on time and in your assigned seat.

2. Have your materials with you every day.

3. Remain in your assigned seat until the dismissal bell rings, do not line up at the door.

4. No hall passes the first or last 10 minutes of class.

5. Electronic devices, cell phones, etc… are not allowed, unless using smartphone to complete online work.

5. No food or drinks in the classroom.

6. Follow the school board dress code and NO hat policy.

7. Follow the CWMP dress code for scrubs and professional dress days.

6. All rules in the student code of conduct will be enforced.

7. Cheating, copying others work will result in a zero.

Requirements for success:

1. Attend class.

2. Complete all assigned classwork.

3. Submit assignments on time, LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED. You have 24 hr., 7 day a week access to the course.

4. ONLY refer to” MODULES “ FOR ALL CLASSWORK when on the canvas site.

5. Be aware of the different due dates and times with all work found in the weekly modules.

Grading:

A point system will be used to compute your grade. Points will be earned in the following categories:

1. points are earned with weekly assignments, discussions, quizzes and tests.

2. YOUR GRADE CAN BE SEEN ON THE CANVAS WEBSITE, FOCUS WILL ONLY REPORT MIDTERM AND FINAL GRADES, CANVAS IS THE MOST UP TO DATE GRADE. PARENTS HAVE YOUR CHILD SHARE THEIR CANVAS LOGIN SO YOU CAN SEE THEIR GRADE at this website

3. Final Exam is 33%

4. Grading scale:

A = 100-90%

B = 89-80%

C = 79-70%

D = 69-60%

5. Your final semester grade will be based on the average of your two 9 week grades and your final exam.

Unit 1: Introduction to Government: Weeks 1&2

Unit 2: The Constitution:Weeks 3-7

Unit 3: The Legislative Branch:Weeks 8,9

End of Quarter

Unit 4: The Executive Branch:Weeks 10-12

Unit 5: The Judicial Branch, courts and the legal system: Weeks 13 & 14

Unit 6: Government Participation & Politics: Weeks 15-16

Unit 7: State and Local Government-organization and operation: Week 17
