1.0Introduction

The Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS)has been in operation for more than 25 years. During this time,WAIS has continually evolved to ensure that it remains capable of achieving its purpose –

“To provide opportunities for talented Western Australian athletes to achieve excellence in elite sport with support from their home environment

To fulfil its purpose, WAIS provides a range of programs and services to WA athletes to enable them to reach their potential at the national and international level.

The goals of WAIS are two fold:

  1. To maximise Western Australian representation on Australian Teams.
  2. To enhance the performance of Australian Teams.

In sports where WAIS does not have a sports program, WA elite athletes competing in Olympic and Paralympic events can apply for support through the Individual Athlete Support Program (IASP).

2.0IASP Objective

The objective of the IASP is to provide agreed support to WA elite or emerging elite athletes to maximise their opportunity to assist WAIS achieve its purpose.

3.0Application Process & Dates

The application process is as follows:

Application forms completed, signed & forwarded to SSO Wednesday 26 September 2012

SSO to forward application to WAIS Wednesday 10 October 2012

Successful applicants notified via mail/email/sms Wednesday 31 October 2012

Commencement of 2012/13 Individual Athlete Support Program Tuesday 1 November 2012

Please note: Athletes must confirm Scholarship by meeting all requirements by 30 November 2012

4.0General Eligibility

Who is eligible for IASP?

  • IASP is available to athletes registered with a recognised WAState Sporting Organisation (SSO) in Olympic and Paralympic disciplines.
  • Applicants must be Australian Citizens and be eligible and available for selection to national teams competing at major international competitions.
  • IASP is available to athletes who are competing in open competition at an international level orare projected to compete at this level in the near future (1 – 3 years).

5.0IASP Categorisation

There are three categories of scholarshipallocated according to an athlete’scurrent and future forecast performance standard. A schedule of benefits will be individualised and offered as per the IASP categorisation. These categories are generically defined as follows:

WORLD CLASS ATHLETE / International competitor in an individual athlete event with a current world ranking of 1-8 OR a member of a national team which has a current world ranking of 1-4 and is considered capable of maintaining this level of performance.
INTERNATIONAL CLASS ATHLETE / International competitor in an individual athlete event OR a member of a national team at benchmark competitions and is considered capable of retaining or progressing their level of performance.
DEVELOPING INTERNATIONAL CLASS ATHLETE / Athlete with the capability to achieve at least international class athlete status within 1-3 years.

6.0Selection Guidelines

The following selection guidelines will be used to assess each application. Please note that the performance criteria outlined below should not be viewed in isolation, as ALLselection guidelines will be taken into account.

  1. Athletes will be measured against the following performance criteriain the past 12 months:
  • International competition performance at the sport’s benchmark event (e.g. World Championships) in Olympic/Paralympic classes;
  • International competition performance at otherOlympic/Paralympic events;
  • National competition performance at the most recent benchmark event (i.e. National Championships) in Olympic/Paralympic classes;
  • International/National ranking as a result of performances achieved.

2. Other important criteria against which an application will be assessed include:

  • The assessment of the relevant SSO and National Sporting Organisation (NSO) as to the performance level, national ranking and international ranking of the athlete and/or the prospect of selection to a national teamwithin 1-3 years.
  • An assessment of how well the athlete has and will evidence the WAIS values of People and Excellence in their pursuit of high performance outcomes.
  • The number of competitors and countries competing in the sport at an international level.
