BAGGINS, BAGGINSES of Hobbiton. –LABINGI

The name Baggins is a translation in English of the actual Westron name Labingi, which was believed to be related to the Westron word laban, "bag". The name is associated with Bag End.

Baggins Family

Hobbit family of the Shire. The Bagginses was a well-to-do family with members living all over the country. They were connected with most of the aristocratic families including the Chubb-Bagginses and the Sackville-Bagginses. The family was in general unexceptionable (by Hobbit standards). Their more eccentric members having a considerable portion of Took blood.

The Bagginses had lived in the neighbourhood of The Hill for time out of mind, and people considered them very respectable, not only because most of them were rich, but also because they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected: "you could tell what a Baggins would say on any question without the bother of asking him". For the name see BAG END.

For the name Baggins, Tolkien intended to recall the word "bag." The associated name Bag End was meant to imply "cul-de-sac." This was the local name of Tolkien's aunt's farm in Worcestershire, which was located at the end of a lane that led no further.

Baggins may also be a reference to bagging, a term used in northern England for eating between meals.
