Round Square at WestminsterSchool.

Foodbank Service Project.

Round Square at Westminster School has a human service project with its community partner, Foodbank. Foodbank is a not-for-profit organisation that sources food and grocery products from the food industry and make this available to welfare agencies and community groups that are assisting the disadvantaged in our community.

One of their main programs is the School Breakfast Programs throughout South Australia:

Going to school hungry can affect a child’s ability to concentrate, to learn and to achieve. Yet this is what happens to thousands of schoolchildren in South Australia each day. To help combat child hunger, Foodbank SA provides food for school breakfast and nutrition programs run by Australian Red Cross, Kick Start for Kids, Rotary and many other welfare groups.

Foodbank requires volunteers to assist in their distribution centre at 377 Cross Road in Edwardstown. The volunteers will carry out generalwarehouse duties such as: sorting groceries, packing foodhampers, labeling products or packing fruit and vegetables.

The program is on Thursday mornings during lessons 1 to 3 with the students returning for the start of lesson 4. Transport is provided to and from the venue. While school uniform will need to be worn to and from the site, it would be appropriate to have a change of clothes for the volunteer work. And, closed shoes MUST be worn as no thongs, sandals or open toed shoes are acceptable for safety reasons.

Our students will be transported to the centre by a Westminster School parent who works at Foodbankand a parent who works at Foodbank. The groups will rotate so that no students will miss consecutive weeks, and there is an expectation that they will work in collaboration with their teachers beforehand to catch up on all work missed due to this service commitment.

Foodbank is regulated by the State government as a secure work place for both their employees and their volunteers. Students will receive appropriate training and instruction from the staff.

Parents are always welcome to visit the site, and this can be arranged through myself.

The Project Managers for Foodbank are Elly McCauley and Tara Mutze.
