APPOINTMENT OF NEW MEC FOR EDUCATION:
MS. ANGELINA MOTSHEKGA
1.After the general election of April 2004, the Premier of the Gauteng Province, Mr. Mbhazima Shilowa, had, as stipulated in the Constitution, to appoint a new Provincial Cabinet. The Gauteng Department wishes to inform you that the Premier has appointed Ms. Angelina Motshekga as the new Member of the Executive Council (MEC) responsible for Education.
- Ms. Motshekga is the former MEC for Social Services and Population Development. She replaces Mr. Ignatius Jacobs, who is now the MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works.
- It is with profound delight that the Gauteng Department of Education welcomes Ms. Motshekga to her new office and we are excited that she brings with her a wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise.
- Ms. Motshekga has been extensively involved in the struggle for better education of all our learners and she also has vast experience in education policy development. She was an executive member of the National Education Union of South Africa (Neusa) and was elected convener of the teacher unity talks which led to the formation of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu). Ms. Motshekga’s experience as an educator includes lecturing at the Soweto College of Education and the University of the Witwatersrand. She has also founded and served on various bodies focusing on education and women’s development. Ms. Motshekga was elected a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in 1999 and was appointed Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Education. She served as MEC for Social Services and Population Development since 2000 until her appointment as MEC for Education.
- The Gauteng Department of Education wishes our former MEC, Mr. Ignatius Jacobs, everything of the very best in his new portfolio. He has left us in the Department with a legacy of education transformation we can all be proud of. We salute him as the political leader who was able to bring stability in the education of our province and also helped to restore the dignity of the teaching profession.
- The GDE will, in the forthcoming weeks, introduce our new MEC to all stakeholders and employees. Ms. Motshekga’s office will be located at 111 Commissioner Street.
