A Bad Day

May 22 2035:

This morning I was having a dilemma. I couldn’t decide what to wear! I was telling my clothes to change from shirt to shirt, but finally I said, “turn blue.” Immediately my blouse changed from a deep red to a nice sky blue.

On my way into the kitchen, I spotted my husband, Joey Samuels, getting ready for work.

“Hey Janet! Before I go I just wanted to let you know that I will be working late tonight. We have a new alien in our lab, and I just wanted to poke around a bit.” Joey said to me walking out of the door. My husband works in a lab dedicated to learning more about aliens. Often, new species are transported to his department.

“Okay honey, but don’t be too long because Abbey might need help with her homework tonight. She is starting algebra today. Better you help her than the House Control Unit!” I yelled after him. Abbey is my 7-year-old daughter who is in 2nd grade this year.

Stalked by Abbey’s pet tiger – a genetically enhanced cat just made to look like its ferocious cousin – I headed toward my car parked outside. Then I remembered that my car was low on fuel the last time I used it, so I walked back inside, grabbed the morning garbage and put it in the trunk of my red sports car. The car quickly decomposes the trash and turns it into fuel, which drains into a drain at the bottom of the trunk.

Before I left, I ran inside to tell the House Control Unit to wake Abbey and get her ready for school. As I walked out, I noticed that there was green slime growing on the corners of the ceiling. Just as quickly as I saw it, the mop-bot 2000 climbed the walls and sucked it into its vacuum.

As I slid into my car, I turned on the e-newspaper - the e-news downloads continually and talks to you instead of you reading it, this makes news about the world more efficient - and told the autopilot to drive me to my office. I am a doctor who specializes in strange illnesses.

While listening to today’s news, something caught my ear. It was categorized as being major.

“Alien escapes! Smarter than any other species! Great threat…” a robotic voice told me. I had heard enough. I just had to get to my office quickly.

By the time I got there, there were tons of patients in the waiting room. As I stepped into my office, the nurse had already brought in someone to see me.

“What seems to be the problem?” I asked the patient.

“Well, you see Dr. Samuels, I have a certain green slime growing on my arm. It is really itchy,” he said with a professional-sounding voice.

“I see. I see,” I said pondering the possibilities. “May I have a look at this?”

“Sure, it is right…here,” he said pointing at a green patch no larger than the palm of my hand.

“When did you first noti - ” I was cut off by the sound of one of the nurses screaming.

I ran outside wondering what in the world happened. Then I saw why she had screamed. All of the patients were covered in sticky, slimy, bubbling, green slime! I went back into my office, but my patient was covered as well!

“What is happening to me?” he said in a quivering voice.

“I have no idea,” and with that, I ran out of the building as fast as I could back to my car. Quickly I turned on the news.

“The discovery of this new alien has only led mankind to new, terrible problems. It seems that the alien doubles every second, and tends to turn into slime when it is hungry for a meal.” All around me were people running wild while quietly being eaten alive.

I even noticed something beginning to grow on the tips of my fingers. It had this tingly feeling to it. While it grew and grew, all I could do was think. Think about my husband, where he was. And Abbey, what was happening to her?

As the alien began covering my body, everything went black. At least now, I knew what had been growing on the ceiling.
