Boríken Awards

El Desfile Puertorriqueño de la Florida, Inc is a 501 C3 non-profit organization under the umbrella of the Centro Cultural Puertorriqueño Inc, as a community based organization in Kissimmee. Since its inception, el Centro Cultural Puertorriqueño has been serving the community by referring people to services; teaching our children about their culture and bringing people together for various community events.

The Boríken Awards celebrate the many contributions of youth and adults in the growing Hispanic Community in the Sunshine State, particularly the Central Florida Region. The name of “Boríken”, meaning Land of the Brave People was chosen for our awards because it represents the original name of Puerto Rico and represents the pride we have in the rich culture of our island that we have brought with us to the Main land.

The purpose of the Boríken Awards is to acknowledge the exemplary work of Puerto Rican adults and youth in diverse roles within our community. The Boríken Awards will be presented at the Gala on Friday November 4th, 2016 and will be held at the Osceola Heritage Park, located in 1875 Silver Spurs Lane Kissimmee, Florida 34744. This being the Sixthyear, the Boríken Awards will continue to help raise awareness and recognition of the outstanding Puerto Rican adult and youth who have distinguished themselves in the community. The awardees and bestowed the “Boríken” awards that symbolizes not only the achievements but also their selfless, significant and consistent contributions to the community. The event will continue making history and setting a precedent in honoring the awardees as Parade Marshalls.

An Award Selection Committee composed of a chair and five to seven distinguished professional of the Central Florida region will be choose the finalists from nominations submitted from the general public and various organizations. The committee will evaluate and rate said nomination using the criteria that has been defined per category based on their experience and their involvement in the community. As well the Award Selection Committee will present once again an award to an outstanding Hispanic adult or youth who have been distinguished among the Hispanic community, in Central Florida from our brothers’ and sisters’ Hispanic Countries.

The Awards Categories:

Outstanding 2016Adult in the Community Service;

Outstanding 2016 Youth Community Service(Any organization that provides resources and services to the community). Outstanding 2016Adult in Performing Arts; Outstanding 2016 Youth in Performing Arts(Music, Theatre, Dance, Poetry, Humorist, etc.). Outstanding 2016Adult in Arts Expression; Outstanding 2016 Youth in Arts Expressions(Painting, Graphic Designs,Caricaturist, Photography, Radio and Television Hosting, Hair 6Stylist, Journalist,Sculpture, Artisan, etc.). Outstanding 201 Gifted Youth or Adult in Performing or Expression Arts. Outstanding 2016Adult in Business;Outstanding 2016 Youth in Business(Entrepreneur, Owner, President, CEO, COO or Top Executive etc.).Outstanding 2016 Adult or Youth Hispanic Achievement(Business or Fine Arts).

About the Nominations/Selection Process

An adult or youth who has gone above and beyond to serve the Hispanic community within the categories mentioned above can be nominated by sending your nomination no later than October 15, 2016via email to: or by U.S.A.mail to: Desfile Puertorriqueño de la Florida,Inc. Submissions MUST include the following information regarding the person you are nominating;

  • Category (from list above)
  • Full Name
  • Tittle (if applicable)
  • Organization/Company/School
  • Phone number from Ofc/Home/Cell number
  • Email
  • Which county
  • Must be Puerto Rican descent (except for the Adult or Youth Hispanic Achievement)
  • Cannot be a family member of the nomination committee or the Desfile committee
  • Short explanation for why this person deserves to be nominated (300 or less)
  • Photo (Head shot) photos will be used in La Prensa in the special event section, as well as the event program and presentation.
  • At least two pictures, and or short video of its work (art categories)

Required

Upon receiving a valid nomination, the Selection Committee Chair will contact the nominee to request his/her resume/overview and picture. The Selection Committee will choose three finalists from each category. Finalists will be announced in La Prensa newspaper issue just before the event. The winner for each category will be announced at the award ceremony on November 4th, 2016.Finalists in each award category will be personally contacted via phone and/email by October 30th, 2016.
