Dear Student,
On behalf of all the staff welcome to Parkview Primary Care Centre. We hope that your placement here will be an enjoyable and educationally stimulating experience and that you will quickly feel part of the team. You will be assigned a mentor who will help guide you throughout your placement. This placement will allow you facilitate and enhance your knowledge and understanding of primary healthcare.
All members of staff are committed to ensuring that the NHS Education Scotland Quality Standards for Practice Placements are being met and that mentorship support is in accordance with the NMC (2008) Standards to support learning and assessment in practice.
It is a joint responsibility to get the most from your placement and for you to share this responsibility with your mentor when discussing learning outcomes and opportunities for learning within this placement. It may not always be possible to work directly with your mentor all of the time, although they will ensure that you will always be supervised by a suitably qualified member of staff. Your mentor will meet with you within 48 hours of commencing your placement and will discuss learning objectives and how best to achieve these. They will arrange a date for a midway assessment and also an end of placement assessment. Your mentor will also complete an orientation checklist. (Appendix 1).

This will be achieved by fostering a welcoming and friendly environment for the client, their families and carers, where each client is treated as an individual, with respect, ensuring a high standard of communication and partnership with all concerned.

Philosophy of Values in Relation to Education of students
We aim to provide an optimum learning environment that fosters and facilitates opportunities for students to identify and participate in experiences to meet their learning needs.
We provide a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where students are supported to reach their full potential. All students will receive a comprehensive orientation and shall be mentored by suitably qualified staff members with the experience and skills to facilitate student learning.
We encourage students to ask questions and will always try to answer them. However we will expect students to assist with their own learning by developing a questioning approach.

Parkview Primary Care Centre Profile
Parkview Primary care centre is a new building constructed in 2006, it incorporates a Pharmacy on site. It covers a practice population on 13,100.
The practice is located on Barry road and is on a public transport route. The practice is a two storied building and is fully adapted for disabled access.
There are seven part time partners in the surgery two part time salaried GP,s and three GP Registrars, and a full complement of nursing and administration staff.
Our aim is to provide a range of high quality, patient centred, primary health care services delivered by committed and well trained staff.
Opening Hours
The surgery is open from 0645 – 1800 Monday to Friday.
On a rota basis the Doctors normal surgery hours are:-

Duty Doctor Triage 0800-1330 Duty Doctor Triage 1330-1800
The early appointments are to cater for those patients who find it difficult to attend the practice due to work commitments.
Staff at the health centre consist of:
Two Health visitors, Public health staff nurse, School Nurse, Midwife, District Nursing team, GP’s, Physiotherapists, Speech Therapists, Podiatrists, CAMHS worker, Practice Nurses, Health Care Assistants, Community Dietician, reception staff and Practice Manager. POST workers.
Visiting health professionals, - Counsellors, Psychologist, Drug and Alcohol worker Community Mental Health Nurse, Early years Support worker, Psychiatrists, Parkinson’s Nurse.
Students will have the opportunity to work with some of these professionals on their placement: this will be discussed further when constructing their learning objectives and timetable.
The Health Visiting team consists of two part time Health Visitors, a part time Public Health Staff Nurse and part time clerical assistant.

Health Visitors work towards improving and enhancing public health, their job is varied and incorporate:
· Working in partnership with families, assessing their needs, to develop an agreed individual health plan addressing parenting and health needs (physical and emotional) for all the family.
· The health visitor works closely with vulnerable families within the practice population to help address health inequalities for example when substance misuse or mental health issues can adversely impact upon the care of the children.
· Communicating with other health professionals in the multidisciplinary team to ensure continuity of health care and support and provide the best outcomes for children and their families.
The School Nurse is based within Parkview she works with all school aged children and is assisted by school health support workers.

School health is a nurse led service providing school age children with health information, support, screening and immunisation programmes. The school health nursing service work in partnership with parents/carers, teachers and other agencies to assist children of school age to achieve optimum health. Ruth has her own welcome pack that she provides for students allocated to her.
The District Nursing Team consists of one District Nurse, seven Staff Nurses, one Assistant Practitioner and one Health Care Assistant.

District Nurses provide a holistic approach to care, treatment and advice for both clients and their family within the home setting. Their job activities vary and incorporate:
· Palliative and end of life care
· Supporting families and carers
· Administration of medication
· INR monitoring
· Clinical screenings : Diabetic COPD, continence
· Phlebotomy
· Communicating with other professionals in the multidisciplinary team to ensure continuity of health care and support
Shift Pattern
The normal working hours of the health visiting team are 0900-1700, Monday to Friday. Students may be offered the opportunity to work out with these times to facilitate their learning objectives, Students will not be expected to work weekends.
What You Can Expect From Us:
· You will receive a timely induction into your work area to ensure you are familiar with the environment and are able to practice safely.
· During your placement you will be allocated a mentor to work alongside. The mentor will be a qualified practitioner who will assist and support you during your placement and provide supervision during your clinical practice.
· We will discuss your learning outcomes at the beginning of your placement.
· We provide a safe and healthy environment which is conducive to meeting identified individual student learning needs suitable to your stage of education combining relevant theory with practice.
· Your mentor will assess your performance against your course learning outcomes and provide continuous feedback to help develop your skills. You will have an initial, interim and final assessment with your mentor.
· We expect to be asked questions and will answer these appropriately. However, as adult learners we may direct you and encourage you to get the answers for yourself.
· You will be given ample opportunity to reflect and review. You will be expected to complete a feedback form (Appendix 2) following focused educational visits.
· You will be a valued member of our team during your placement and you can expect support from all our colleagues.
· We will listen to your feedback about your placement and will respond to any issues raised sensitively.
What we expect from you
· We expect you to act in a professional manner in accordance with the Guidance on Professional Conduct for Nursing and Midwifery Students (NMC, 2009), be courteous, respectful and show enthusiasm, interest and motivation to learn.
· We expect you to be punctual at all times and for any activity identified by the mentor.
· We expect you to ensure that your mentor is aware of your learning outcomes for the placement.
· You should inform your mentor and university if you are ill or absent from placement.
· We expect you to maintain and respect confidentiality at all times. This applies to clients, their records, and discussions between student and their mentor.
· We will guide you in many areas but you will be expected to assist your own learning through questioning, research and teamwork.
· We expect you to dress in accordance with the university uniform policy
· We would like you to raise any issues regarding your placement with your mentor in the first instance.
Dress Code
You are expected to dress smart/casual during your placement with the health visiting team (no jeans please). If you are spending time with the district nurse or practice nurse you will be expected to wear your uniform. You should wear your identification at all times, no jewellery apart from wedding band should be worn. If using public transport you should change into your uniform once you have reached your placement there are changing facilities at health centre that you can use.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is extremely important and you will be expected to respect this at all times. You must notify your mentor if you know any clients within a non-professional capacity. If this is the case your mentor may advise that you have no involvement with the client or their family.
Use of Mobile Phones
The use of personal mobile phones must be restricted to break times. It is unprofessional to access them out with these times, however in special circumstances permission may be sought to access your phone.
Learning Opportunities
You will be given a timetable for the duration of your placement (appendix 6). Some learning opportunities may have already been arranged by your mentor. Your mentor will work together with you to identify other suitable learning experiences.
