Rookies

Rookies took to the fields at Western Flat on Saturday for a skills session before two separate games were played.

Older Rookies

A great game was seen with some good defensive play from the Blue team. They gained some opportunities on goal, however couldn’t convert. The opposition, however, was able to capitalise on their chances and score 3 goals to Lewis Green. Blue came back to score a goal from Emilee Stone, as teams fought for the ball, running hard and defending well, using their improved hockey skills.

Younger Rookies

Both Blue and Yellow made good positions on the field and worked well together as teams. Esther Duff scored a great goal after a pass into the circle. Both teams kept up the attack, Yellow defending well against the Blue teams advances. Many opportunities were seen, as teams continued to score resulting in an evenly matched game and a fantastic game had by all.

Juniors

Crusaders v Paladins

Paladins attacked early in the game against Crusaders as they worked along the wings to push forward. Amy Drabsch for Paladins and Ryan Boyd for Crusaders created some great tackling play in the centre of the field. Bridie Hamilton broke free from the pack forcing a short corner in Paladins favour. However, Crusaders’ strong defender Zac Staude wove across the backline preventing Paladins from finding the goals. Charlotte Fiebig was confident as she brought the ball past Crusaders’ forward 25 line, however could not advance further past Paladin defender Siobhan Evans. Paladins were awarded with several short corners, but the defence proved too strong as Zac Staude cleared the ball once more, sending it into Crusaders forward line. Paladins’ defence left unprepared, Tilly Hamilton took advantage, scoring the first goal of the game. Zac Staude kept up the attack and shortly followed with Crusaders’ second goal. Paladins were working hard to bring themselves back into the game, Connor Butler proving handy in attack, but couldn’t match the strong defence of Thomas Halliday for Crusaders. Hannah Dinning and Bridie Hamilton, however, persistently attacking, finally awarded with a quick goal before the half time whistle.
Keen to make amends for the first half deficit, Paladins attacked early in the second half. Joseph Duff for Crusaders attempted to hold them back, however Isaac Stanton was successful in forcing a short corner for the Paladins. Crusaders were put under pressure as Amy Drabsch for Paladins brought the ball into the circle time and time again. Finally Paladins were awarded for their team play with a goal off another short corner by Siobhan Evans, levelling the scores. As rain began to fall, another score looked doubtful for either team. However, younger players Connor Butler and Imogen Rivaz for Paladins and Marc Rowsell and Charlotte Fiebig for Crusaders helped to keep the game moving, the game ending evenly with a 2-all score.

Royals v Kings

Play appeared even in the first half as the ball moved back and forth. Royals made some early attack, but were however stopped by goalie Koby Bamford. Chloe Andersen and Sophie Greenslade were strong in defence for the Kings also, not allowing Royals to score. Eventually, however, Royals broke through to score the first goal through James Duff. Daniel Obst was also playing strongly as Kings made some attempts on attack. Henry Dahlitz and Ben Kuchel played well drawing a short corner for Royals, but there was no score. Kings made a quick run for goals, as Sophie Greenslade directed the play into the circle for Osten Martin to pass to Maverick Hutchins who levelled the scores between teams. As the Royals fought back, Lachlan Ruchs worked hard to stop their attack. At half time the scores remained even.
Zac Taylor produced some great play, helping to send the ball towards the Royals’ goal, however the Kings pushed back and gained several short corners to their advantage. Kings’ forward play continued, as Osten Martin and Tyson Stewart both scored quickly for the team. Play opened up as the Royals did not give in. James Duff scored again for the Royals, but the Kings were quick to reply with another fast goal from Tyson Stewart. Kings gained another two short corners with only minutes left to play. Royals took control of the ball, only for it to be taken back by the Kings. Play continued back and forth as the Royals managed to bring the ball back into their attack. As tensions rose the Royals were trying desperately to score again, Zac Taylor finally converting another goal. However, it did not prove enough, the Kings holding the lead as the final whistle was blown.

Women

High School v Bordertown

Both teams started aggressively with a lot of good play up and down the field, Bordertown taking the first penalty corner, but without success. High School pushed forward on a number of occasions, with some great runs from Kimberley Wagenknecht and Faith Probert. Georgi Cornford was strong in goals for Bordertown, defending lots of attack from High School. The first half ended with no score.
The second half began with more attack on goal by High School, as Bree Marziale just missing a great shot on goal. High School finally broke through to score through Rin Kozona, putting them into the lead. Bordertown had their chances to score through three short corners in their favour, but they were unable to convert. High School, however, scored their second goal through a short corner with a great shot from Kimberley Wagenknecht. More attack could not be stopped by Bordertown, as High School converted their third and final goal by Bree Marziale. A well fought game was seen for both teams.

Willalooka v Mundulla

Cold conditions at Western Flat were experienced during the late game between Willalooka and Mundulla. Both sides could not make it past the oppositions’ defence, with many opportunities on goal missed. Willalooka had numerous shorts in their favour, but they were unable to convert. Play remained even, as both sides produced excellent teamwork, however the scores remained nil-all at half time.
Even play continued into the second half, however Lauren Dinning for Willalooka worked hard to save some goal opportunities by Mundulla. Andrea Carter made it through the defence line however, to score the first goal for Mundulla, putting them into the lead. Willalooka kept the play in their attack, however could not counteract Mundulla’s goal. Tensions rose as Mundulla looked to score again, however Willalooka’s defences remained strong. Willalooka finally converted after a quick run down the field resulted in a good cross pass to Christine Foale who put the ball against the back board. The contest continued but neither team could find the upper hand before full time was called.

Men

Willalooka v Mundulla

A very even first half was seen with great play from both teams. Zac Staude finally scored the first goal for Willalooka with a superb back stick. Mundulla proceeded to head for their goals and converted a goal through Michael Court. Willalooka fought back yet again with Zac Staude scoring again for Willalooka just before half time.
Both teams came out desperate for another goal in the second half with Willalooka showing some excellent stick work and tackles. Zac Staude continued to look for goal, but neither team was further able to convert. Both teams produced good play, the score resulting in another win to Willalooka.

Bordertown v High School

Bordertown lead the attack with Josh Duff nearly scoring a goal early in the first half. With James Verco and Craig Rowsell working strongly for High School, the ball moved into their attack drawing a short corner. The short was played out hard, High School determined to score a goal, converting through Bob Gensicke. Bordertown drew three consecutive short corners, but nothing resulted. Beautiful attack by High School pressured the Bordertown defence. Nathan Pietsch produced a shot on goals, winning a short corner in High School’s favour. Bordertown replied with a penalty flick, bringing the scores to 1-all through Derek Butler. Half time was concluded with a short corner for Bordertown, the ball deflected into the goals bringing Rangers into the lead.
The rain settled in and the game recommenced with High School gaining the first short corner for the half. Bordertown quickly ran the ball into their attack, however, scoring another two goals through Derek Butler and Brad Carter. Sam Staude and Thomas Verco worked well together on a short corner to send the ball into the back of the goals, however the goal was disallowed after not being brought out of the circle. High School eager to get a goal, kept up the attack through several more short corners. Thomas Verco finally scored again for High School. Time ended with another short corner to play out on the final whistle, but High School could not convert the short corner in their favour, Bordertown finishing in the lead.
