OLD NEWSBOYS’ GOODFELLOW FUND OF DETROITEXCEEDS

2017 FUNDRAISING GOAL

DETROIT,February12, 2018—The Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit announced today that it has exceeded its 2017 fundraising goal of $1.1 million. The official amount raised is $1,214,315 which includes in-kind donations of dressed dolls, dental health kits and newspapers. Of that amount, $46,101was raised through the 104thAnnual Detroit Goodfellows’ Sales Day on Nov. 27 when hundreds of Detroit Goodfellows, Detroit police officers and Detroit firefighters sold a special “Goodfellow edition” of The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press in various locations throughout the city.

“We are very happyto have exceeded our 2017 fundraising goal and appreciate everyone who participated,”said Dr. Mike Jennings, 2017 President.“Delivering on our mission of ‘No Kiddie Without a Christmas’ wouldn’t be possible without the community support and efforts of our dedicated membersand volunteers throughout the entire year, both of which allow us to continue to positively impact children’s lives. “

With all donations collected, the Detroit Goodfellows annually distribute 34,000 holiday gift packages through Detroit police precincts to needy children in Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Harper Woods and River Rouge. This year 9,000 dolls were given to little girls aged 4 - 9 as part of the Goodfellow gift packages containing books, warm clothes, dental health kits,toys and candy. Four-year-old boys received a stuffed animal as part of theirs.It is estimated that two out of every three Detroit public schoolchildren receive a Detroit Goodfellows holiday gift box

Founded in 1914, the Detroit Goodfellows is the original and oldest Goodfellows organization and is not affiliated with any other Goodfellow group. It also sponsors dental care for children in partnership with UD Mercy Dental School, provides free shoes to children in need and helps send hundreds of needy children to camp each summer.
