RESEARCHEXPERIENCES

MyresearchprojectshavebeenbasedintheIndianSub-ContinentandincludetheIndianOcean TsunamiDisasterof2004andtheeradicationofthehand-pulledrickshawsfrom Calcutta.Aspartofmy Masters’thesisI wasamemberofateamofresearcherswhowerefundedbytheNationalScienceFoundation toexaminetheorganizationalresponseinthepost-tsunamidisasterphase.Ourstudyonmassfatality managementimmediatelyfollowingadisasterofthemagnitudeofthetsunami,wasthefirstofitskindin nearly30years.Wefoundthatthebodyhandlingandrecoveryeffortwasexpeditedduetopre-existingsocial networks,experiencewithdisasters,andestablishnetworksbetweengovernmentandnon-government

organizations.Mythesisfocusedontheemergentnatureofdisasterresponseandtheconcurrentorganizational

hierarchywhichemergedto respondtoadisasterofthemagnitudeofthetsunami.Ifoundthatthead-hoc structuresprovedtobeextremelyefficientatbodyhandling,responseandrecovery;findingsthatarevaluable foremergencyresponseplansandpolicymaking.My dissertationresearchisfocusedinCalcutta,Indiaand

seeksto usethetheoriesofculturalandurbangeographyaswellasculturalandpoliticalecologytoinvestigate

abanplacedonthehand-pulledrickshawsandtheresultantconsequences.My analysissuggeststhatthe rickshawpullersarebeingtargetedbecauseoftheirethnicity,yettheymakea significantcontributiontothe social,cultural,andurbanlifeof Calcutta.Myanalysisofthisissuecomesata criticaltimeforthecity juxtaposedbetweendevelopmentinitiativesontheonehand,andthequestionofequity,humanrights,and livelihoodofmarginalizedgroupsontheother.My researchagendaaimstoensurethat unrepresentedgroups withinIndiaareincludedinthepolicy-makingprocesses.Thisframeworkofunderstandingofthehand-pulled rickshawissueis pertinentforinformaleconomiesandurbanchangeinthedevelopedanddevelopingworlds. MyworkontherickshawswasmentionedintheSundayNewYorkTimes,July3,2014.
