RE: Transfer Responsibility for the Inspection of Elevators and Similar Devices from the City of

Tulsa to the Oklahoma Department of Labor

The purpose of this memorandum is to provide owner/operators of elevators and similar devices within the City of Tulsa area with information on successfully registering and transferring their elevator to the Oklahoma Department of Labor (ODOL).

As you already may be aware, the City of Tulsa has been working with the Oklahoma Department of Labor (ODOL) to transition their Elevator Inspection Program to the ODOL Elevator Program. Beginning August 1, 2015 ODOL will assume the duties for inspection services and anticipate the transition tobe completed by June 30, 2016. At that time ODOL will be responsible for the inspections of all elevators in the City of Tulsa. This will include schools, city and county buildings, and etc. The coming year will see ODOL inspectors assume responsibility for Acceptance Testing on all new installs, alterations, and remodels, as well as investigating safety and accident complaints. Due to thechallenges with this undertaking, Business Owners and Management Companies will be exempt from Periodic Inspections for one year upon completion of required forms. Please follow the outline below and complete the attached form(s) to ensure your compliance with the Elevator Safety Act.

  • Complete the attached Elevator Registration Notice for EACH elevator and conveyance at your location. Return the form via mail, fax, or email to the ODOL.
  • Complete and submit the Periodic Inspection Variance form to ODOL. If your device is approved for a one year exemption you will be invoiced a certificate fee of $25. Upon full payment of your invoice an Oklahoma number will be assigned and a Certificate of Operation will be issued to post in your Elevator.

Please ensure each form is completed in its entirety (including your Tulsa Permit Number), for each device at your location.
