Oil Pastel Abstract Drawing to Music

Steps:

1.  Read about Wassily Kandinsky, look at some of his artwork and discuss his painting process.

2.  Practice using oil pastels. Complete two mini abstract works of art:

  1. One on white paper
  2. One on black paper
  3. Experiment with using the water with pastels
  4. Practice blending colors

3.  Listen to music and decide on a song to inspire your artwork. Practice how to communicate the song abstractly through your art. Focus on the:

  1. Rhythm/Beat (through lines and patterns)
  2. Mood/Message (through colors)

4.  Make sure your design includes both unity and variety. Do not include recognizable objects; rather focus on the lines, shapes, values, colors, and textures of your design.

5.  On 12” x 18” or 12” x 12” white or black paper, use oil pastels to blend colors and create your design while listening to your chosen song.

6.  Remember to incorporate unity and variety and show the mood and rhythm of the song visually.

7.  Create a label to accompany your artwork that gives your name, the title of your artwork, the song and artist inspiration, year, medium and size.

8.  On lined paper, write an artist statement and discuss the process of your artwork. Remember to discuss the what, why and how of your artistic process. Possible things to address, but not limited to:

  1. The song/artist that inspired your artwork and why you chose that song
  2. How you communicated the rhythm/beat of the music in your artwork
  3. How you communicated the mood/message of the music in your artwork
  4. How you incorporated unity and variety into your artwork
  5. The materials you used and how you started and finished the artistic process
  6. What you enjoyed while completing the project

9.  Complete the self-assessment portion on the rubric

10.  Spray artwork (and two mini practice pieces) outside with fixative, if needed

11.  Turn in the following paper clipped together into your class box, & highlight your name:

  1. Two small practice pieces
  2. Final drawing
  3. Label
  4. Rubric
  5. Artist Statement
