Welcome to Modern Edge Furniture

On the home page you will meet Tony, the Production Manager, who welcomes you to Modern Edge Furniture. You will see a lot of him as you work through the Toolbox tasks.

Tony is available to help you with resources and information relating to the units you’ll be working through.

The Drawing Room

The Drawing Room relates to the unit of competency LMFFM3011A Produce manual and computer-aided drawings.

When you click on the Drawing Room a new pop-up window will appear introducing you to Tania, the Drawing Room supervisor here at Modern Edge Furniture.

Tania will introduce you to staff who will guide you as you learn about manual and CAD drawing. There are two tasks for you to work through in the Drawing Room.

The Machine Workshop

The Machine Workshop relates to the unit of competency LMFFM3031A – Set up, operate and maintain CNC machining and process centres.

When you click on the Machine Workshop a new pop-up window will appear introducing you to Max, the Leading Hand in the Machine Workshop here at Modern Edge Furniture.

Max is the expert on CNC machinery. He and his staff will guide you as you learn about the basics of CNC machinery. There are five tasks for you to work through in the Machine Workshop.

General information

Home

As you work through the tasks in either the Drawing Room or the Machine Workshop you’ll become very familiar with the HOME button. This button is available on all task pages.

Clicking on the HOME button will take you back to the Home Page. From there you will be able to select another task in either the Drawing Room or the Machine Workshop or to access any of the other links found there.

Glossary items

As you work through the tasks in this Toolbox you will come across a number of terms that you may not be familiar with. Don’t worry … help is at hand!

There is a GLOSSARY button on the top left-hand side of any task page screen. When you click on this link a new window will appear. This is the glossary and the letters of the alphabet are at the top of this window.

Just click on any of the letters to find terms and their definitions. Easy!

We’ve also created direct links to the glossary whenever a glossary term appears in the information you see on the screen. It has a broken line beneath it. When you click on it, you will be taken straight to the glossary definition for that word or words.

Acronyms

Acronyms are words formed by the first letters of other words. For example, CAD stands for Computer-Aided Drawing.

Acronyms seem to be everywhere these days. I don’t know about you, but sometimes it gets a bit confusing knowing what everything stands for.

Whenever you come across any acronyms in this Toolbox, just roll your mouse over that part of the screen and your cursor will change to a white arrow with a question mark next to it. As you hover at that point a text box showing what that acronym represents will appear. For example: OHS becomes Occupational Health and Safety.

Working through a unit

Introduction

Earlier in this tour you were told that to enter the Machine Workshop you simply click on the Machine Workshop area found on the home page of the Toolbox or on the Machine Workshop link at the beginning of the Text-only navigation page. This is the place to go to work through all the tasks related to the unit ‘LMFFM3031A – Set up, operate and maintain CNC machining and process centres’.

If you want to work through the tasks for the unit ‘LMFFM3011A – Produce manual and computer-aided production drawings’ click on the Drawing Room area found on the home page of the Toolbox or on the Drawing Room link at the beginning of the Text-only navigation page.

Before we go any further let’s take a look at the different icons used in the tasks and what they are for.

Task icons

As you work through the tasks in this Toolbox you will come across a number of different icons which represent a wide range of information that will assist you along the way.

Discussion icon Discussion topics will provide you with the opportunity to communicate with others. Your facilitator may use these discussion topics as part of the assessment process.

Hint icon Hints on various topics are provided to assist with your understanding.

Remember icon Tips on important information to be remembered are provided.

Working through the tasks

When you click on the Machine Workshop you will see a new pop-up window.

In this window, Max provides an introduction to the unit and some information on how to start working through the tasks.

If you are using text only navigation, selecting the Machine Workshop link will take you to the tasks for that area.

There are five tasks for this unit:

TASK 1: BE PREPARED!

TASK 2: CNC PROGRAMMING

TASK 3: SET UP FOR MACHINING

TASK 4: OPERATE MACHINERY

TASK 5: CLEAN UP WORK AREA

As you move your mouse across each of the tasks, you will notice that they will highlight ready for you to select one of them. To select a task you simply move your mouse to the task and click your left mouse button. If you need to go back to the home page just click on the CLOSE button you can see in the top right-hand corner of the window.

If you are using Text-only navigation selecting each task will take you to it. You can tab between the task page and the Text-only navigation page.

Click on TASK 1: BE PREPARED!

Task introduction

The task INTRODUCTION page is the first thing you’ll see after selecting a task from the Machine Workshop.

On this page, you’ll find an overview of the task and what you’ll be expected to do as you work through it. As you scroll down through this page you will notice a How to Use section. The information found here provides a link to the performance criteria for this task, identifies the steps you will need to work through and explains the relevant links to the resources that will assist you as you work through the steps.

You’ll also notice a menu at the bottom of this screen. It includes buttons for the Introduction, each Step and the Project:

As you roll your mouse across each of the menu options provided here, the link will highlight and a description of that link will appear. For example, As you place your mouse on the STEP 1 button, “Step 1: Investigate Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issues” will appear in a text box.

If you are new to a topic, it is suggested that you work through all the steps in the task. (If you already have knowledge of this topic, have a chat to your facilitator about going straight to the project work.)

Task steps

Each of the tasks includes a number of relevant topics. These topics are represented by a number of steps. In Task 1: Be Prepared! in the Machine Workshop, for example, you will find links to five steps.

STEP 1: Investigate Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issues.

STEP 2: Interpret a cutting list.

STEP 3: Optimise a cutting plan.

STEP 4: Select quality material.

STEP 5: Organise a workspace.

You can access these steps in any order, however it is suggested that if you are new to a topic, you should work through all the steps in order.

Task page layout

Once you move from the INTRODUCTION screen of a task to a STEP within that task you will notice that the layout of the screen changes.
The left-hand side of the screen contains information about the topic for that step. As you read through this information there will be references to additional information that will help with your understanding of the topic being discussed. Links to this additional information have been provided in the right-hand column of the screen which is known as the Resources column. Once you click on any of the links provided within the Resources column a new window will open containing the information relating to that link. Once you have finished reading through this information, click on the Close button and select another resource if you wish.

Task resources

A range of different icons have been used within the Resources column.

Whenever you see any of the icons listed below, there will be additional information for you to access. You simply need to click on any items displayed in the list to be taken directly to that particular resource.

Test your knowledge

Interactive activities that will enable you to test your knowledge as you work through the task pages have been provided throughout the tasks.

Whenever you come across the ‘Have a go’ logo, get ready to be challenged and put your skills and knowledge to work!

Task project

Each of the tasks within either the Drawing Room or the Machine Workshop requires you to complete a project. Links are provided to access your choice of project which can be undertaken in your workplace or place of study.

Each project contains a number of activities that need to be completed to achieve competency against the performance criteria for the task you are working through.

Your facilitator may wish to use these projects as part of your overall assessment.

Select the next task

Once you have finished a task, you’re then ready to move onto the next one.

There is a HOME button in the top left-hand corner of the task screen. When you click on that button you will be taken back to the home page from where you can select the work area you want to access and then a task from the list that is provided.

All the examples we've talked about so far are for tasks in the Machine Workshop. If you are working through a task in the Drawing Room you will notice that the colours of the pages and icons are different, but they look very similar to the ones in the Machine Workshop and everything works the same way.

Good luck!

Accessing Resources
