Local school board member earns prestigious statewide honor

COLUMBUS — David Spridgeon, president of the Arcadia Local Schools Board of Education in Hancock County, is among five public school board members named to the Ohio School Boards Association’s (OSBA) 2011 All-Ohio School Board. The board members will be recognized with the association’s most prestigious honor on Nov. 16 during the 56th annual OSBA Capital Conference and Trade Show in Columbus.

The other honorees and the districts they serve are: Walter S. Armes, Whitehall City Schools; John L. Boyer, Waverly City Schools; Donna J. Myers, Northwestern Local Schools (Clark County) and the Springfield-Clark Career Technology Center; and Roger L. Samuelson, Champion Local Schools (Trumbull County) and Trumbull Career & Technical Center.

OSBA Executive Director Richard Lewis will recognize the All-Ohio School Board members on the final day of the Capital Conference, a four-day convention attended by more than 10,000 Ohio school board members, superintendents, treasurers, business officials and other school leaders.

Every year, OSBA names one board of education member from each of its five regions — Central, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest — to the All-Ohio School Board. The award recognizes outstanding service to public education and represents the dedication shown by thousands of board members across the state.

All-Ohio School Board candidates are nominated by their respective school boards; OSBA regional committees then select the five winners.

Spridgeon, who has been a school board member for five years, represents OSBA’s Northwest Region. He is extremely devoted to his school district and takes an active role in a host of school activities. He participates with the PTA and music and academic boosters; chaperones field trips; and attends musical and student achievement events. He also is Arcadia’s legislative liaison to OSBA.

Spridgeon’s involvement with OSBA is extensive. He serves on the Board of Trustees; Delegate Assembly; Capital Conference Planning Task Force; Capital Conference Work Committee; Arrangements & Hospitality Team; and Rules Committee. He also is OSBA Northwest Region president-elect and serves on that region’s Executive Committee. His commitment to professional development and association service has twice earned him the OSBA Award of Achievement.

Spridgeon demonstrated his dedication to his community and others following the deadly 2010 tornado that struck Lake Local Schools in neighboring Wood County. His leadership skills and humanitarian spirit were clearly evident when he chaired the OSBA Northwest Region’s campaign to help the devastated school district. The highlight of the campaign was a successful 5K Run-Walk-Crawl event that collected thousands of dollars to aid Lake Local.

Spridgeon also is a member of Arcadia United Methodist Church, where he is a trustee and a member of the finance committee.

In nominating Spridgeon, his board colleagues wrote: “Dave always puts children first in all his decisions, and his dedication to the district and quality education is unwavering. He is always willing to make the hard choices and stand firm on ethics.”

Spridgeon serves as a probation officer and court official with the city of Findlay. He also has worked as a school resource officer. He and his wife Angie live in northeastern Hancock County and have four children.

OSBA leads the way to educational excellence by serving Ohio’s public school board members and the diverse districts they represent through superior service and creative solutions.
