Scripture Lessons

The Bible is at the heart of our worship, because in it we read and understand the very words of God. Every word in the Bible has come from God and is vitally important so that we can know His heart and His truth. Each week during our service, we read a section of the Old Testament, a Psalm, a section from the New Testament, and a reading from the Gospels. If you do not have your own Bible, we would like to give you one as a free gift – please speak to a clergy member or an usher.

Old Testament: Isaiah 66:1-5

This is what theLordsays: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Could you build me a temple as good as that? Could you build me such a resting place? 2My hands have made both heaven and earth; they and everything in them are mine.I, theLord, have spoken! “I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word. 3But those who choose their own ways—
delighting in their detestable sins— will not have their offerings accepted. When such people sacrifice a bull, it is no more acceptable than a human sacrifice. When they sacrifice a lamb, it’s as though they had sacrificed a dog! When they bring an offering of grain, they might as well offer the blood of a pig.
When they burn frankincense, it’s as if they had blessed an idol. 4I will send them great trouble—
all the things they feared. For when I called, they did not answer. When I spoke, they did not listen.
They deliberately sinned before my very eyes and chose to do what they know I despise.” 5Hear this message from theLord, all you who tremble at his words: “Your own people hate you and throw you out for being loyal to my name. ‘Let theLordbe honored!’ they scoff. ‘Be joyful in him!’ But they will be put to shame. The Word of the Lord.

Psalm: 54

1Come with great power, O God, and rescue me! Defend me with your might.
2Listen to my prayer, O God. Pay attention to my plea.
3For strangers are attacking me; violent people are trying to kill me. They care nothing

for God.

4But God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive!
5May the evil plans of my enemies be turned against them. Do as you promised and put an end

to them.

6I will sacrifice a voluntary offering to you; I will praise your name, OLord, for it is good.
7For you have rescued me from my troubles and helped me to triumph over my enemies.

Epistle Lesson: James 3:16 – 4:6

16For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.

17But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.18And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness. What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you?2You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.3And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure. 4You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.5Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him. 6And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Hymn: “Humble King”

Oh, kneel me down again here at Your feet

Show me how much You love humility

Oh Spirit, be the Star that leads me to the humble heart of love I see in You

You are the God of the broken, the friend of the weak

You wash the feet of the weary, embrace the ones in need

I want to be like You, Jesus, to have this heart in me

You are the God of the humble, You are the humble King

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Gospel: Mark 9:30-37

30Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was there,31for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them,“The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead.”32They didn’t understand what he was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him what he meant. 33After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?”34But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.35He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said,“Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.” 36Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them,37“Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.” The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to You, Lord Christ.

The Sermon

Moment for Reflection

Nicene Creed

Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

This is a time for group prayer as well as personal prayers. Please prayerfully respond to the leader with the words in bold type. And please add your own prayers of thanksgiving and intercession either silently or aloud when invited to do so.

Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church and the world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Help us to fulfill your great commission; making disciples of all nations; teaching them to obey all that you have commanded. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Give grace, heavenly Father, to all Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, and especially to Foley Beach, our Archbishop; Keith Andrews, our Bishop; Fr. Brian and Fr. Don, our Priests; and Dee Renner and Rosalind Marver, our Deacons, that by their life and teaching, they may proclaim your true and life-giving Word, and rightly administer your holy Sacraments. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We ask you to rule the hearts of all who govern us. May they administer justice, govern wisely, and strive for the welfare and peace of the whole world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We humbly ask you, gracious Lord, to comfort and strengthen all those who, in this earthly life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

I invite you to add your own thanksgivings or requests at this time.

We bless your holy Name for all your servants who departed this life in your faith and fear, praying you would grant us grace to follow their good examples, that with them we might partake in your heavenly kingdom. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

The Deacon concludes with the following prayer

Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

The Confession and Absolution of Sin

Deacon We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace

Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you.

People And with your spirit.
