Stow on the Wold

Stow on the Wold has a complex and interesting history. The hill top site was the location of a large prehistoric enclosure, probably covering a part of the site of the present settlement; a small portion of this enclosure (on the northeastern edge of the town) is designated as a Scheduled Monument.

The town is situated adjacent to the Fosse Way, and probably has Anglo-Saxon origins; in the medieval period it was a borough with a large central market place fringed with burgage plots; these features are still important elements of the plan and character of the town and now lie within the Conservation Area. Excavations in advance of development are identifying further important settlement sites on the edges of the existing settlement; such sites and the setting of the historic town will be significant factors in planning the expansion of the settlement. In addition a Roman settlement designated as a Scheduled Monument lies close to the northwestern side of the town adjacent to Abbotswood Registered Park and Garden, while to the southeast (and within the Conservation Area) is situated the remains of the gardens of Maugersbury Manor.

The significance of the local historic environment should be highlighted in the strategy.

5 Recent planning history

This land forms part of a site for which a pre-planning application consultation in 2012 prompted desk-based assessment (SW11887; HER44406) and geophysical survey (SW11998; HER44473), and in 2013 a subsequent planning application (13/01856/FUL) for residential development prompted trial-trenching (SW12097; HER44625).

The work revealed archaeological remains of high significance. These comprised a late Bronze Age ‘ranch’-style boundary, extensive later prehistoric settlement, Roman activity and Anglo-Saxon settlement.

No objection was made to the proposed development on the proviso that archaeological excavation should be secured by means of an appropriate planning condition.

An appeal against the non-determination of the planning application is currently (January 2014) in progress.
