Dear Lakewood Parents and Families,

It was so wonderful to see so many parents at our annual Back-To-School Nights! We hope you found the evening a great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, learn about the curriculum, and hear about the high expectations we all have for your children. I also would like to thank the Lakewood Grade 3 parents who came to our Curriculum 2.0 math night which was held during the first week of school. We will be holding another informational parent meeting regarding the changes to the new report card for students in Grades K thru 3. Our cluster of elementary schools will be holding this meeting in the middle of October.

We will be having our Kick-off assembly for our Claire’s Gourmet fundraiser on October 3rd. Please be sure to check the flyer on our school website for the details. Remember, all of our proceeds will be going towards the purchase of additional Promethean boards for our classrooms. We have only 5 boards and would like to have one for every classroom.

We welcome the beautiful fall weather and the month of October. Please know that your children are working hard and we are very proud of them! We hope to see you all at our annual Columbus Day Open house, which is scheduled for Monday, October 8th. We welcome your visit between 9:05 and 11:15. This is an excellent opportunity to observe what your children are studying and see evidence of their learning. We wish you an enjoyable fall season!

Hope to see you soon,

Mrs. Malcotti

Dr. B’s 10 suggestions for morning Drop-Off traffic:

  1. Try and teach your child to ride the bus.
  2. Leave early – especially on bad weather days.
  3. Drop off your child anywhere along the drop-off zone.

Things move faster when several cars unload at the same time.

  1. Plan ahead so your child can get out of the car without you.
  2. Keep close to the carin front of you.
  3. If your child is upset, close the door and park.
  4. When ready, return to use the drop off lane.
  5. Stay inONE LINE. NO PASSING, NO EXCEPTIONS.
  6. Do not use your cell phone while driving.
  7. Avoid conversations with teachers / parents while in line.
  8. Reconsider having your child take the bus.

From the MediaCenter:

Things are really moving in the media center this year. We check out between 150 and 200 books every day! Diary of a Wimpy Kid remains popular, and everyone is looking forward to the new book due out in November. All students have a media class every week and always have a book exchange as part of their class. Additionally, we are open in the mornings for book exchange before morning announcements.

I would like to thank Sue Clampitt, Sue Strausbreg, Cindy Pohoryles, and Tammy Ricciardella who have returned as library volunteers. We are all learning the new web-based circulation system. We have room on Monday and Tuesday mornings for volunteers to help shelve, check-in, and check-out books.

I am getting to know your children and am enjoying their enthusiasm for reading and technology. I am going over the collection and will continue to buy books to support the curriculum and keep kids interested in reading. I am looking forward to the book fair in October and hope many of you will volunteer to make it successful! The more successful it is, the more money for books!

Thank you for the warm welcome to Lakewood. I know it will be a great year! – Carla McCaffrey, Media Specialist
