JOB TITLE: Student Assistant

TIME BASE: Part-Time

SHIFT: Daytime (Varies)

WORK WEEK: Monday-Friday

LOCATION: Sacramento

DUTIES: The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is seeking applicants for a student assistant position in the OIG’s Medical Inspection Unit (MIU). The MIU team conducts medical inspections at each of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s (CDCR’s) 35 adult prisons. Under the direction of a Senior Deputy Inspector General (MIU supervisor), the Student Assistant will be responsible for conducting quality control reviews of Excel-based spreadsheets that support the OIG’s reported medical inspection results and corresponding draft reports. The Student Assistant will be required to assist MIU supervisors with other special projects, as needed, and may assist other units within the OIG with projects from time-to-time.

In conducting quality control reviews, the Student Assistant will perform the following specific tasks: Review and revise all spreadsheets that document the MIU’s compliance testing results to identify all document formatting errors and any irregularities or omissions of certain data within the spreadsheets. Contact MIU staff to discuss discrepancies, as needed; and revise the spreadsheets accordingly. When conducting quality control reviews of draft reports, the Student Assistant will validate reported data within the body of the report to summary tables and detailed results in the report appendices. In addition, they may be asked to perform a review of the entire draft report to identify any potential errors, omissions, or deficiencies. The Student Assistant will report to the MIU supervisors on the results of their quality control reviews and develop any recommendations for process improvement. The Student Assistant may be asked to develop a curriculum for, and provide training to, MIU staff on communing occurring formatting issues.

REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent(s) must possess excellent writing and communications skills, use good judgment in decision-making, organizational skills, and the ability to work well with others. The incumbent(s) must also have the ability to assure the privacy and security of confidential documents and material handled and/or delivered inside or outside the agency. The incumbent(s) must be honest, trustworthy, have integrity and high moral of character.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Enthusiastic, mature and self-motivated individuals who are currently enrolled in a college. Individuals must carry a minimum of six units and maintain a 2.0 GPA or better. Applicants, who have experience and proficiency with Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Excel software applications will be given strong consideration.
