International Student Success

International Students on F-1 Visa - Maintaining Status Fact Sheet

International students at Providence College must follow these basic immigration requirements

1)Possess an unexpired passport valid for at least six (6) months into the future.

2)Check in with the Director of International Student Success in the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate StudiesIN PERSONuponyourarrival in the U.S. for the start of each semester (must be done in person within 15 days of entering the U.S.)

3)Notify the Director of International Student Success in the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studiesany time you change your address (can be done via e-mail).

4)Maintain full-time enrollment and normal progress towards a degree. Full-time enrollment is defined as aminimum of 9 credits per semester. Students must also remain in good academic standing at PC.

  1. Summer and winter courses may have fewer credits to be full-time.

5)Obtain PRIOR authorizationfrom the Director of International Student Success in the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate StudiesBEFORE withdrawing from classes or taking a leave of absence.

6)Notify the Director of International Student Success in the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies if (a) leaving the U.S. without completing your program of study, (b) completing your program early, or (c) changing to another non-immigrant status.

7)Obtain PRIOR authorization from the Director of International Student Success in the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies if requesting to extend your studies at Providence College beyond the anticipated number of semesters to complete your degree.

8)Not exceed 20 hours per week of on-campus employment duringthe fall and spring semesters.

  1. On-campus employment may be full-time (more than 20 hours per week) during the summer and official school breaks.

9)Internships (UNPAID OR PAID) performed off-campus require special authorization! Students should arrange to meet with the Director of International Student Success in the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studiesat least one month prior to beginning an internship.

10)Request a travel signature on your I-20 from Director of International Student Success in the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies at least one weekBEFORE leaving the U.S.

11)Maintain adequate health insurance coverage for the duration of your program.

Failure to adhere to any of the above regulations will cause you to fall “Out of Status.” A student who is out of status is required by federal law to apply for reinstatement, approval of which is at the discretion of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
