FOR YOUR INFORMATION

1. REFERENCES: The District reserves the right to confirm any or all references filed with the Department of Human Resources and to check any reference developed independently by Human Resources. A minimum of three acceptable references on district/state forms are necessary.

With the employment application, each applicant receives three reference check forms. Applicants forward the reference check forms to three professional references of their choice and conduct follow-up, as necessary, to insure that references are completed. The Department of Human Resources will be unable to process applications without the references and cannot accept responsibility for reference follow-up.

EXPERIENCED TEACHERS: Experienced teachers should secure references on the District/State Reference Form. The following are acceptable references in succeeding order of preference….

  1. Former Principal/Supervisor {especially for the last two positions held}
  2. Superintendents under whom applicant has been employed
  3. Teachers with specific knowledge of applicant’s professional performance

TEACHERS WITHOUT EXPERIENCE: Since inexperienced teachers cannot secure references available to experienced teachers (as listed above), other information pertaining to teaching ability and education is necessary.

As a minimum, inexperienced teachers should file with their application the following:

  1. References (District/State Reference Form) from Professors and/or Deans of the Schools of Education from which the teacher graduated and/or Student Teaching Cooperating Teachers
  2. Copies of the Student Teaching record (if available)
  3. A transcript of the educational record of the applicant (personal copies of transcripts are acceptable)

Note: Because Student Teaching records and complete transcripts are not available until late in a semester, applicants may file early applications with references from Professors/Deans and later supplement the application with other required information as soon as it becomes available. These circumstances should be noted on the application form.

CONFIDENTIALITY OF REFERENCES: Applicants should respect the right of any reference to provide confidential information about the applicant and should encourage references to mail completed reference forms directly to Human Resources.

2.CERTIFICATES: Copies of South Carolina and out-of-state teaching certificate(s) should be included with the employment application. If applicant has married since securing certification, applicant should apply for a certificate name change as soon as possible. If South Carolina certification is in process of being obtained:

  1. Status of certification application with date submitted should be noted on the employment application and
  2. A copy of the appropriate NTE/PRAXIS II Report should be attached, if the examination has been taken.

PLEASE NOTE: Incomplete applications are held in pending status for six (6) months only. Complete applications are kept on file for one (1) year and may be updated annually.

Please let us hear from you. Should you have any problems or questions, telephone 843-398-5100. The Department of Human Resources is open Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
