Course Philosophy
Chemistry I investigates a wide range of topics in the world of chemistry, including atomic structure, the periodic table, bonding, reactions, stoichiometry, gas laws, solutions, thermodynamics, acids & bases, and nuclear chemistry. This course will give students the necessary foundation in chemistry so they will be prepared for further study in these areas at either UCVTS or in college. This class will focus on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of these topics.
Chemistry I is a six credit laboratory class, 5 credits through class and 1 credit by mandatory co-curricular recitation sessions. It is essential that students perform laboratory experiments to fully witness and understand the theoretical science concepts being presented. Labs will include problem solving and cooperative group work, since these skills are essential for becoming successful in any field of work. Students will use various types of technology to collect, analyze, and present experimental data. In addition to student-performed labs, classes will also include teacher-led demonstrations and individual and group projects. It is also essential that students attend co-curricular recitation sessions.
While studying the theoretical concepts of chemistry, this course will apply these concepts to the real world since an understanding of chemistry and its impact on our environment is essential for developing knowledgeable young adults. We will discuss science topics in the news to make our students aware of the significance of this subject.

Grading
The final grade for the course consists of four marking period grades, worth 20% each, as well as a midterm and final exam worth 10% each.
Marking period grades will consist of the following assessments:
Tests / Major Projects40%
Laboratory Reports20%
Quizzes15%
Homework15%
Quarterly Exam10%
Homework Policy
❖You are expected to do your homework by the due date. Unless otherwise noted, homework assignments are due the next time we have class. If you do not do your homework by the due date, you will receive a zero. There will be no opportunity to bring the homework in later to receive credit unless you speak with me regarding a valid excuse.
❖We will periodically go over the homework due during each class, so be prepared to participate.
❖Automatic call home after 2 missing assignment
❖All work to be handed in must have the proper heading with First & Last Name, Date Submitted, & Block.
Major Assignment Late Policy
If you turn in a major assignment late, 10% will be deducted every calendar day. After 5 calendar days, the assignment will no longer be accepted and you will receive a zero followed by a call home.
Missed Lab Policy
❖If you miss a laboratory, you will be required to either make up the lab, or complete a make up assignment within a week of returning to school. YOU are responsible for making up the lab and YOU are responsible for making arrangements as to when you will make up this lab. If you do not make up the lab within a 7 calendar days of returning to school, you will receive a zero for the missed lab.
❖If you miss a lab because you cut class, you will receive a zero on the lab.
❖Laboratory reports will follow the Major Late Assignment policy.
❖Automatic call home
Missed Quiz / Test Policy
❖Tests and Quizzes will always be announce
➢Tests will be within 7 calendar days of finishing the covered material.
➢Quizzes will be the next class
❖If you miss a quiz or test, you will be required to make up the quiz/test during class on the very next time you come to class.
➢If you do not want to take your test during class you are welcomed, with my approval, to stay after school to take it.
➢Leniency will be granted if you have been out of school for an extended period of time and you have missed more than 50% of the material covered on the quiz/test. Speak with me and we can make arrangements.
❖If you miss a quiz/test because you cut class, you will receive a zero on the assessment.
❖Automatic call home
