NO. R-422. House concurrent resolution congratulating the Grand Isle Elementary SchoolVermont Destination Imagination middle level championship team.

Whereas, Destination Imagination is a student competition on both the local and international levels, where students are challenged to solve problems creatively, and

Whereas, student participants develop the ability to work as a team, brainstorm, manage projects and time, and employ creative and critical thinking skills, and

Whereas, school teams gathered on March 14 at the University of Vermont for the state Destination Imagination tournament, and

Whereas, last November, each participating team was assigned a structurally, technically, or theatricallybased central team challenge to solve for an eight minute tournament answer, and

Whereas, in addition, an instant challenge was presented to the students during the tournament for the first time and required a five-minute improvised answer, and

Whereas, when the scores of all the teams for both challenges were tallied, the Grand Isle Elementary School team, whose members were participating in their first Destination Imagination event, was declared the winner of the middle level competition, and

Whereas, as winners of the middle level Vermont state championship, the Grand Isle team is eligible to participate in the 2004 Destination Imagination Global Finals to be held in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 26-29, and

Whereas, the student members of the Grand Isle Elementary School middle level team, including Marisa Harris, Ashley Larrow, Sam Juaire, Nick Shepard, Francis Marchant, Seth Buermann, and Jordan Young, have proven their ability to solve problems creatively and dramatically both with months of preparation and on an instantaneous basis, and

Whereas, the team’s academic advisor, Frank Gerdeman, was enormously helpful in preparing these students for the tournament, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the Grand Isle Elementary School’s Destination Imagination team on winning the 2004 middle level competition at the Vermont state tournament, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Frank Gerdeman at the GrandIsleElementary School.
