School of Nursing and Midwifery

Application forms and information for Outgoing exchangeareprovided by the University’s International Office, based on the main Flinders campus (at the back of the Registry building) and on their website

There are a few minordifferences in the dates and processes for the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Onereason for this is that the majority of exchangesfor the school are for the experience of undertaking a clinical placement in another country.

This information below therefore is specifically for the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Where there are differences in the information provided by the International Office and the School, the information in this school document will be the appropriate information for nursing and midwifery students. Eligibility

Have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 or above

Have completed at least one year of an undergraduate program (36 units)

Be independent, mature and an ambassador for Australia and FlindersUniversity

Agree to the “Conditions of Participation” as stipulated in the application.

Be in good health or have a manageable health condition.

International students studying for a FlindersUniversity degree can apply to go on exchange and for the student exchange scholarships. International students are not permitted to attend a host institution in their home country. Please note:International students may be required to take a TOEFL/IELTS test at their own expense to apply to some partner universities.

Students undertaking graduate awards are also eligible.

Choose your destination based on information on the University website, exchange sessions and your own research. The options for 2009 are:

Application form and attachments

Once you have made a decision that you would like to undertake an exchange and chosen your preferred location you should complete theFlinders outgoing exchange application which includes the following attachments:

Attachment 1 / Personal statement
Guidelines are provided for writing this statement
Attachment 2A / Academic references
Approach two lecturers or tutors to provide you with a reference. Give them a copy of this Attachment 2A page which provides the reference guidelines. They email their references directly to the International Office at
Attachment 3 / Financial plan
You can undertake your own research of flight costs. Estimates of other costs can be found on most of the partner institution websites. If you have difficulties in finding information the International Office can provide you with assistance. While on an outgoing exchange you are responsible for all travel related expenses including:
  • Airfares, accommodation and daily living expenses (including books)
  • Passport and visa costs
  • Health, travel, incidental insurance cover and any incidental costs (Flinders University Travel Insurance

Attachment 4 / Study plan
You will need to have an appointment with your Course Coordinator to complete the study plan and to provide theapproval signature on the first page of your application. Contact Janet Barelli in the school to arrange this appointment.(You may also need to contact thespecific topic coordinators of the semester of the exchange to discuss completing the topics as online students. In some cases this might be done after the exchange is confirmed.) The study plan will also need to be signed by the Faculty Administrative Officer, Natalia Hutton.

Application closing dates for Denmark and Canada

Semester 1 (and Canada in mid-year): October 27 2008

Semester 2: March 9 2009

After completingyour application, you will need to make a time to meet with the Exchange Officer (Chen Wang), in the International Office to submit your application by the closing date. At that meeting they will provide you with an application form for the partner institution (if applicable) and discuss administrative processes.

It takes approximately 8-12 weeks for partner universities to respond to applications.Once correspondence is received from the partner institution the International Office will contact you immediately. If the partner university contacts you direct, please advise the International Office and provide them with a copy of your letter of offer. The International Office will provide you with a confirmation letter of your exchange that can be provided to Centrelink or relevant Immigration Department.

Scholarships

Once you have submitted your exchangeapplication you can apply for Overseas Study Assistance scholarships. A letter verifying the exchange and the credit towards your Flinders degree needs to accompany this application. This letter can be provided by Janet Barelli in the school office.
