SECTION: PROGRAM MANUAL

TOPIC: DAY AWAY PROGRAM

POLICY TITLE: SERVICE DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION OF SERVICE:

The Day Away Program is a support service which provides supervised activities in a group setting for adults. Support, education and counseling are provided to the caregivers of the clients attending the program, either on a group or individual basis.

Clients are offered transportation to and from the program, contingent upon caregiver’s needs andclients will attend the ADP site closest to where they are currently residing. The clients attend from 9:30 am to 3:30 p.m. Lunch and snacks throughout the day are provided. Activities of a social and recreational nature are planned on an individual and group basis, dependent upon the client’s assessed needs. Personal care and grooming are provided by staff. Bathing is not part of the ADP service. A registered nurse on staff provides ongoing assessment of health status and monitoring of medication as required.

Frequency and scope of the service will be based on an individual assessment by HCSS staff. When a Day Away site has a waiting list, a maximum of one day of Day Away will be provided to a new client upon admission.

THE GOALS OF DAY AWAY:

  1. To provide a positive social experience for the client.
  2. To help maintain quality of life by reinforcing the individual’s sense of identity and self worth.
  3. To help maintain the skills of the individual.
  4. To delay institutionalization.
  5. To provide relief, education and support to the family.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF DAY AWAY:

We will provide our clients with a friendly, safe environment which encourages, supports and enhances the individual’s sense of self identity and self worth.

We will provide the caregiver with: respite, information, support and the opportunity to meet and learn from others in similar situations.

We will provide our volunteers with the opportunity to participate in work which they find rewarding and meaningful.

THE STAFFING AT DAY AWAY:

Due to the general cognitive functioning level of the clients, combined with the physical incapacity inherent in a generally aged population, there must be sufficient staff and trained volunteers to maintain safety and meet basic client needs. In accordance with guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health, Adult Day Program Manual, March 1995, there must be at least two staff members present during regular program hours.

Qualifications of each staff member will be dependent upon the job descriptions as outlined in ADM-3 (Job Responsibilities.)

In compliance with the Grey-Bruce Plan, Nov. 1991 (from Long Term Care Community Support Services, Appendix F, Service Guidelines for Senior Day Programs in Grey-Bruce) there must be at least one staff member present at all times who is competent in CPR.

Staffing of the Day Programs will be reviewed on a yearly basis. This will be part of the evaluation process for each program. Factors such as client care levels, number and experience level of volunteers and the facility will be examined when reviewing staffing levels.
