WHAT DOES THE SUBJECT INCLUDE?

The Diploma will provide you with the opportunity to gain foundation knowledge and understanding in sports and fitness. Practical sessions form an important aspect of the course enabling you to develop skills that are needed to work in leisure centres, sports retail outlets and activity centres.

WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE?

The course is made up of 60 credits over 1 year, with units being valued at either 5 or 10 credits. Each of which is assessed by a range of methods including written assessments, role play, presentations and practical activities.

IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?

If you have an interest in sport and are hoping to pursue a career in one of the many sport, leisure or recreation related areas but do not have enough GCSE’s to get onto the Level 3 programme then this is the course for you.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

4 GCSE’s at D grade (or 4 GCSE’s at Grade 3 or above on new GCSE grading system) or a Level 1 Sports (or other relevant Level 1 qualification) at pass grade. Students are required to be self-motivated, disciplined and to take a degree of responsibility for their own learning.

Delivery of this course incorporates both theoretical and practical elements. Student participation is valued and essential in all practical units. Learners will have the opportunity to gain a range of additional qualifications in the field of sport and exercise, such as first aid, sports leader’s awards and National Governing Body coaching certificates. Some of these qualifications may incur costs but these will be kept to a minimum.

HOW MANY HOURS, WEEKS, YEARS DOES IT LAST?

The full programme consists of 10 hours of core lessons with 1 hour of group or individual tutorials per week. TNS Scholars will also be expected to train and play competitive matches on top of the full academic programme. In addition to this you will be expected to use some of your own time for conducting research and assignment work in allocated independent learning slots.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?

Learners will need to be prepared with writing materials, ring binders to keep work together and sports kit for gym sessions.

HOW CAN I PREPARE MYSELF BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS?

Sports kit with the College logo will be required. It is available online at Fortis Sports, search for North Shropshire College when on website and then select the required kit.

It is recommended that students purchase two polo shirts, a couple of tee-shirts for practical lessons and a hooded top or sweat top. Rain jackets are also worth purchasing but not a necessity.

Various trips are organised throughout the year to enhance the student’s overall experience at college with costs being kept to a minimum. A trip portfolio is given out at interview stage to allow students to plan for which trips they wish to go on

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Successful completion provides the opportunity to gain the equivalent of 4 GCSE’s at Grade C or above which can lead students onto a Level 3 Extended Diploma course or employment within the Sport, Leisure and Recreation sectors.

ARE THERE ANY EXTRA COSTS?

All sports students not doing a scholarship are required to pay a compulsory £30 for an additional Sports Leaders qualification. On enrolment students are asked to make a contribution of £25 towards the compulsory induction trip which contains exciting activities in a nearby city. Scholarship students will contribute towards their kit and fitness/club fees.
