OBJECTIVES

This course will explore the role of occupation as it relates to your health. It will help you understand occupational injuries, how these injuries occur, and how to prevent them. The information presented in this course is designed to be practical for all students. This course addresses four general areas of occupational health: musculoskeletal, hearing, mental, and vocal health.

FORMAT

This is a “blended” course = face-to-face class meetings + online instruction

Face-to-face class meetings

  • Once a week
  • Same time and same place
  • Required to attend every week
  • Include lectures, guest speakers, demonstrations, interactive discussions, and some hands-on activities

Online instruction

  • involves reading, discussions and surveys

Note: It is important that you check Blackboard on a regular basis (at least a few times per week) for updates, announcements, homework assignments, surveys, and exam information.

Be aware: Blackboard undergoes scheduled maintenance every Saturday night from 11pm until 2am Sunday morning. Nothing can be accessed or submitted during this period, including exams that have already been started. You will be held accountable for any test that could not be submitted because if was began before the maintenance period.

•Be respectful towards others in class and online including being late and leaving early

•Turn off all electronics before entering class

•Do not use cell phone, laptop computer, iPod, or MP3 player in class

•Never sign for another person

•TWO “free” absences given for emergencies

•Illness is NOT a university-accepted absence

Discussion Requirements

Weekly discussions will consist of two parts: a post and a reply. The post must be submitted to the discussion forum each week within72 hours of class. Each student must then reply to at least 1 classmate’spostbefore the next lecture. Please postyour discussion as early as possible, to allow for critical dialogue. Feel free to reply more than once.

When replying to a post, be sure to hit the “Quote” button, NOT the “reply” button. This will ensure your reply is understood in context and can be graded fairly. Failure to do so may result in a lowered grade.

Discussion Grading

Full credit will only be given to posts and replies submitted on time. A late post may be penalized by 1 point (10% of total discussion grade). Forgetting to reply by the following lecture class will result in being penalized 2 points (20% of total grade). Again, it is best to post your discussion as early as possible, but wait until the 72-hour deadline to reply.
