SATELLITES

Equipment: 5-6 cones (different sizes) and 5-6 Frisbees per team, a bunch of yarn balls and smaller gator skin balls (meteors and asteroids)

Objectives: Throwing with correct form, strategy, teamwork, spatial awareness

This is a space game. All activity takes place space, with each team having its own space station. Set it up by asking what they know about satellites and then tell them that they are part of a special team sent by GOOGLE to be the new provider for Google Earth. They must build and maintain 5-6 working satellites in space. There are 2 space stations competing today for the TOP JOB and your team must work together to win!

* Set – Up – Students will be split into 2 teams. One team will be in the east space station. One team will be in the west space station. The half court line is the divider for each space station. Each space station will get supplies to set up 5-6 satellites. A satellite is set up by placing a cone on the ground and balancing a Frisbee on top of the cone. The satellites must be set up within the basketball court and in their own space station. They may set them up as close or as far away as they like from each other. The team must come up with a strategy they feel will give them the best success with the building and maintaining of their satellites. Once all satellites are set up, all workers must put one hand on the blue mat (wall) for their station and wait for the music. When the music starts, all workers must stay in their space station (their half of the gym) and try to throw meteors and asteroids at the competing space station’s satellites and knock them out. They are NOT throwing at people! Since they are in space, they are ‘floating’ around and there is no way to guard their satellites. If a satellite gets knocked out, the workers on that space station must work quickly to fix it! If all satellites get knocked out, the other team wins.

After about 5-10 minutes OR if a team wins, feel free to stop the game, have them reset and relocate satellites and start over.
