Definition of ‘Research Active’ Staff at UNSW

OBJECTIVES
Theobjective of this program is:
To support collaborative projectsand partnership between scholars within and outside UNSW which will lead to future applications for external funding (such as through ARC schemes, Category 2 grants etc.)or clearly defined research outputs (HERDC income categories).
ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS
Applicationsmay be submitted by individuals or groups, and must provide details of scholars and/or external organisations involved in the partnership, including the nature of the collaboration (new/ongoing), and how the proposed project will be leveraged into a future application for external funding from a partnership funding scheme, and whether any A1, B1, or C1 publications can be expected prior to or in addition to the funding application.

Applicants are encouraged to think about the different ways they can use funds to foster collaborations that would not otherwise be possible. Applicants are also encouraged to make a case for why bringing scholars and partners together in one location is necessary rather than using other means—technology etc. Applications for funding for research retreats for up to seven days for the purposes above will also be considered.

As a Faculty level scheme, these funds are allocated to research initiatives that are not funded by schools. With this in mind, funding within the following categories is not encouraged (but may be considered in exceptional circumstances and where there is a strong justification):

•Workshop subventions

•Conference costs

•Keynotelectures

•Research assistance

CRITERIA

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Strength of the proposed research project (30%)
  • Feasibility of collaboration and likelihood of competitive grant application and/or HERDC publication/s resulting from collaboration (30%)
  • Alignment with Arts and Social Sciences Research Strengths (20%)
  • Value for money (20%)

LEVEL OF FUNDING
Applications will be considered up to the value of $15,000. The Faculty has a modest amount of funds to

distribute for these schemes, so value for money will be highly regarded. It is likely the Faculty will only

be able to fund 2 to 3 applications in any year.

PAYMENT OF FUNDS

Funds will be allocated by the Faculty to Schools and Centres, which will be responsible for administering the payment of funds. When a Collaborative Research grant is awarded the FRO will coordinate with the Manager of the relevant School, who will then oversee the administration of funding awarded. Funds will be available in early 2017 and must be expended and reconciled to project before the end of year 2017 finance close off deadlines– no carry forwards are available. No replacement funds will be available for those who do not adhere to the financial deadlines. Any questions regarding financial deadlines should be directed to your School/Centre Manager.

Please note that success of this application does not automatically qualify you for support from the Faculty External Relations team with the hosting and promotion of any mentioned events. This is a separate process to the award of these funds and you are encouraged to liaise with the External Relations team prior to submitting your application.

Applications are expected to have Head of School approval. Any applications without HOS approval may be deemed ineligible. Applications must be submitted by close of business 28th November 2016.
