Philosophy

It is my belief that the library media center is the hub of the school. I am committed to encouraging my students to become lifelong learners. Character education is built into each area of study in our school and so it will be the underlying themes in the media center, where all are welcome, have an opportunity to discover and feel some degree of success. I will ask of all those that enter the media center to bring in their best selves. If we feel accepted and appreciated in our efforts then it creates an environment where we can thrive and learn. Rules and procedures are in place to maximize learning and any behaviors that are not conducive to learning will be dealt with according to the consequences outlined.

Family and community involvement are not only welcomed, but necessary, as we are all partners in the education of our children.

Scheduling

I will be committed to the best program for developing the skills of all children. All classes will have a regularly scheduled library time every other week throughout the school year. Library classes will alternate with the Guidance classes. Students may come with passes during at any time to check out library books. Individual students may come and exchange their books during the regular school day.

* Teachers and students are allowed and encouraged to use the 'open times' in the schedule.
* Teachers have 2-4 library passes to allow students to come down 2 to a pass when classes are not being taught in the library. It is a source of great pride for the students to come in, check in their own books, and check out their own books. This allows me to be available for reader's advisory, help students with DESTINY, use of DISCUS, maintain shelves, and to help students look for/discuss lost books and the options they have in rectifying this issue. Having students take responsibility and become more independent in their use of the library are two of my main areas of focus.
* Students must have their books checked in before more can be checked out. It is the students’ responsibility to make sure that they do not have out more than their allowed number of books.

Student Guidelines

All students will be allowed and encouraged to use the library on a daily basis with their classroom passes. Checking out materials can be done at any time. Students will conduct self-check-out when they come in individually during open access to check out books.

1. Kindergarten students may check out one book. 1st grade will check out one book first semester and then increase to 2 books second semester.

2. 2nd grade students may check out 2 books at a time. 3rd-5th grade students may check out 3 books at a time.

3. All students must return or renew items every other week.

4. Students with overdue books or lost books will need to pay for the book(s).

Teacher Guidelines

Faculty and staff may check out an unlimited amount of books and materials. Faculty and staff may come in at any time and check out materials. This is a self-checkout process.
