Oak Ridge high’s new football coach, Scott Blade, buys the first home in Groves Park Commons
Oak Ridge, TN (June 8, 2009)—Winning and being ‘first’ come naturally for the Wild Cats’ new head football coach, Scott Blade. So, it should come as no surprise that Coach Blade now has his first ‘first’ in Oak Ridge—a new home in Groves Park Commons. Blade has the distinction of being the first person to buy a home in the newly opened traditional neighborhood development that will eventually have 325 single family homes, multiple green areas, walking trails and lakes.
Groves Park Commons’ builder Mike Stevens is delighted that Coach Blade has chosen the “Laurel Creek” model, a two-story cottage home with three bedrooms and 2.5 baths. “We believe Coach Blade and his family will quickly feel at home here in the Commons,” said Stevens. “We’ve designed all of our homes with great appointments and modern, user-friendly layouts for families.”
Coach Blade echoed the sentiment while standing in his front yard. “We love it, everything is first class!” Blade, 35, was recently chosen from a pool of 60 candidates to become the new head coach of the Oak Ridge Wildcats. He moved from Hillsboro, where he led his team to a 13-2 record and the state Class 4-A championship against perennial powerhouse Maryville High School. The 4-A title game ended the Rebels’ 74-game winning streak. As to why Blade would leave Hillsboro when he had a 37 and 5 record after only three years, the coach remarked, “I just felt like this was a great opportunity for me and my family.”
What attracted Coach Blade and his family to Groves Park Commons was the construction, the high end amenities, and the energy efficient homes. The environmentally-forward, attractive and inviting planned community is quickly becoming the area’s showcase for sustainable best practices in single home and townhouse construction.

ABOUT:
Groves Park Commons ( a Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND) developed by partners Walter B. Wise, Terry Wheeler, Bill Kennedy, and Christos Christopoulos. Groves Park Commons – a Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND) is a 325 housing unit community currently being constructed on the Old South Hills Golf Course site located at 795 Tuskegee Dr. Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
Groves Park Commons:
In every game, there is a game changer, and Groves Park Commons is set to change the housing industry, and, change what East Tennesseans will be looking for in a new home. What is Groves Park Commons? First of all lets identify ‘TND’, it means a Traditional Neighborhood Development. TND is a philosophy of community, a way of not ‘just building a house,’ but designing a home to compliment a lifestyle. It’s a comprehensive approach to designing a community that’s in harmony with the land, and extends that synchronization into every feature of a neighborhood and home. It’s a walking community, it’s an active neighborhood, it’s a little slice of heaven.
When you drive into Groves Park Commons, you will feel the difference immediately. It is a district of tree-shaded sidewalks that meander into elegant green spaces, with fountains, and people. You see people are the real key to the Groves Park Commons plan. And it was people right here in Oak Ridge that invested over a year of information gathering and planning before the first bit of earth was turned.
The result is a site plan that is designed around aesthetics, views from every window, all utilities hidden from sight and inviting green space that will pull you out into nature. Groves Park Commons is a community where kids will have places to play and safely ride bikes, and parents will stop putting off getting back in shape. It will be a village of friends who enjoy knowing their neighbors and place where golden memories will be made. And it’s so much more!
The energy star rating is going to cut your annual utility bill to what a typical home might pay in a month. The town homes have been awarded one of the highest efficiency ratings ever awarded. This helps retain the investment you will make, as the resale values on energy star homes stay high. All this careful planning and attention to detail will give residents a feeling of serenity when they arrive home and a renewed sense of community.
